Effect of Packing Materials on Viability of Coriander Seeds at Cool Temperature

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the SRSC, Faridpur during 2013-14 to identity the appropriate storing materials for coriander seed under cool condition storing and the efficiency of the storage containers on retention of seed quality. Seed moisture content increased at a very low rate in all packing materials. The germination decreased gradually with the increase in storage time in different non perforated storage containers. Aluminum foil bag stored seed showed highest germination percentage. Higher vigour index was noted from March to November in aluminum foil followed by plastic can and tin pot. Among the treatments, over all best performance was found in aluminum foil bag and the lowest vigour index was found from poly bag.

Objectives:

To identity the appropriate storing materials for coriander seed under cool condition storing

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the laboratory of Spices Research Sub Centre, Bangldesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Faridpur during the period from November 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014. Coriander seeds (BARI Dhania-1) harvested at March 2013 and stored in plastic drum of SRSC, Faridpur continuing up to October 2013. The study was started with those seeds which were supplied by SRSC for experimental purpose from November 2013. Seeds were stored (300 g seeds per packet) in different air tight packing system viz., poly bag (0.1 mm), tin pot, aluminum foil bag and polythene bag at 5⁰C in refrigerator. Germination and vigour test were done by using 4001 seeds form each packet in five replications following Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The materials such as seeds of coriander, oven for determination of seed moisture, weighing machine, plastic box, Substrate (sand), water bottle for germination and wet and dry bulb thermometer for collecting regular relative humidity and temperature. etc. were used for research work. The seeds were placed on sand media in the Petri dish every month interval i.e. November, December, January, February and March. Germination was recorded after 14-15 days of sowing. The following data were recorded: a. germination % b. root length (cm) c. shoot length (cm) and d. vigour index. the percentage of germination was calculated from the number of healthy seedlings germinated in each Petri dish Vigor index was calculated following the formula of Baki and Anderson (1973) by multiplying germination % with seedling length (cm) of the same seed packet. The seed germination was 84% at the time of storage (month of October 2013). The moisture percentage of experimental seed was 8.93% at initial stage. Moisture percentage was monitored in every month interval of each treatment and it is stated in Table 1. The prevailing average air temperature and relative humidity (RH %) during the storage period is given in the Appendix 1. Data analysis was done following computer package programs MSTAT-C. Mean comparison was done following LSD at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The result concluded that coriander seeds could be stored with acceptable range of germination (60%) up to month of January (61%) from storing period (month of April) of seed with aluminum foil bag and tin pot at low temperature. The seedling vigour was obtained the highest in aluminum foil bag and tin pot above 700 up to month of December. This programme will be continued from April 2014 to March 2015 and then final conclusion will be drawn.
