Quality of Coriander Seeds Stored in Different Air Tight Container at Room Temperature

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at SRSC, Faridpur during 2013-14 to identity the appropriate storing materials for coriander seed under ambient condition storing and the efficiency of the storage containers on retention of seed quality. Seed moisture content of coriander seed increase over time in all the containers with a higher rate in poly bag and tin container and with a lower rate with aluminum foil and plastic container. Seeds stored in different containers significantly varied in respect of germination percentage and it decreased with the advancement of storage period. After storing, highest germination was observed with aluminum foil bag and the lowest was with the poly bag. The highest vigour index was observed with aluminum foil bag followed by tin pot and the lowest was with poly bag.

Objectives:

To identity the appropriate storing materials for coriander seed under ambient condition storing and the efficiency of the storage containers on retention of seed quality

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the laboratory of Spices Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Faridpur during the period from November 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014. Coriander seeds (BARI Dhania-1) harvested at March 2013 and stored in plastic drum of SRSC, Faridpur continuing up to October 2013. The study was started with that seed from November 2013. Seeds were stored (300 gseeds per packet) in different air tight packing system viz, poly bag, tin pot, aluminum foil bag and polythene bag at room temperature (23.71^oC to 25.79^oC from November to March). The seeds germination was 84% at the time of storage (month of October 2013). The moisture percentage of experimental seed was 8.9% at initial stage. Seed moisture percentage was noted in every month interval of each treatment and it is stated in Table 1. The prevailing average air temperature and relative humidity (RH%) during the storage period is given in the Appendix 1. Germination and vigour test were done by using 400 seeds from each packet in five replications following Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The seeds were placed on sand media in the petridis every month interval i,e. November, December, January, February and March. Germination was recorded after 14-15 days of sowing. The following data were recorded: a. germination % b. root length (cm) c. shoot length (cm) d. vigor index. the percentage of germination was calculated from the number of healthy seedlings germinated in each Pertridish. Vigor index was calculated following the formula of Baki and Anderson (1973) by multiplying germination % with seedling length (cm) of the same seed packet. Data analysis was done following computer package programs MSTAT-C. Mean comparison was done following LSD at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The result concluded that coriander seed could be stored with acceptable range of germination percentage (60%) using any air tight container from November to March at room temperature. But aluminum foil bag and plastic can maintain germination percentage 59% up to month of January. The seedling vigor was highest in aluminum foil bag and plastic can 710 and 666, respectively up to month of December. This program will be continued from April 2014 to March 2015 and then final conclusion will be drawn.
