Impact of Agro-chemical on Soil Environment: Ii. Ecosystems Effect on Phosphate and Potassium Adsorption/ Desorption by Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Phosphate and potassium adsorption/desorption studies were conducted with Madhupur clay soils developed under forest and farm ecosystems in order to asses the impact of agro-chemicals on P and K adsorption behavior. Results showed that soils from farm ecosystems adsorbed lesser amount of P and K than adsorbed by the soils from forest ecosystems. The desorption of P on other hand was high in case of farm soil and low in forest soil. The long-term use of agro-chemicals in farm soil probably occupied some of the adsorption sites especially the strongly adsorption sites, that ultimately led to the low adsorption and high desorption capacity of P and K by farm soils.

Objectives:

To see the P and K sorption/desorption behavior of a soil developed under farm and forest ecosystems.

Methodology:

The experiment on phosphate sorption/desorption and potassium adsorption capacity of soil was carried out with Madhupur clay soils developed under farm and forest ecosystems. Soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm depth of Madhupur "Shal" forest and the S.M. farm of BADC near by the forest where fertilizers were used for more than 30 years under intensive cultivation. Some of the physicochemical properties of soils. The procedure used by Sanyal et al, (1993) was followed for P sorption study. The K-sorption study on the other hand was done as follows. Potassium solutions of different concentrations i.e., 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35 and 0.40 mmol K I^-1 were prepared by dissolving KN0₃ in distilled water for studying the K sorption capacity of soils. Calculated amount of NaN0₃ was also added in each of the solutions to keep the ionic strength of solutions at 0.40 mmol I^-1. Another set of K solutions of the above mentioned strength was prepared by using a background solutions (instead of distilled water). The background solution contained 0.20, 0.10, 0.80, 0.10 and 0.64 mmol I^-1 Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, AI³⁺, S0₄^2- and CI- respectively. Eight Gramm soil was shaken for 4 hrs. at 130 rpm in 100 ml plastic bottle with 30 ml of each of the K solutions. At the end of shaking period the suspensions were centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 5 minutes and then filtered. The first few ml of the filtrate was discarded. Potassium concentration in the equilibrium solution was determined with the help of an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The difference in K content between the initial and equilibrium solutions was considered as the amount of K adsorbed.

It could be said from the obtained results that the amendments of soils with chemical fertilizers have some adverse effects on nutrient retention capacity of soils. Further studies with different soils from different areas are needed to come to a conclusion.
