Impacts of Agro-chemicals on Soil Environment: Degradation of Nogos and Sumithion in Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three soils representing Ghatail, Sonatala and Belabo series were treated with nogos, sumithion and urea + nogos and urea + sumithion with field capacity moisture, and incubated for 20 days. The BAU farm soil of Sonatala series are also treated with high doses of nogos and sumithion. The nogos and sumithion residues were determined after 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 15 and 20 days. The residues of sumithion, urea + sumithion, nogos and urea + nogos degraded gradually with progress on incubation time in all three soils. The rate of degradation was linear in soils of Ghatail, Sonatala and Belabo series. The degradation was slightly higher with high doses of pesticides. Both sumithion and nogos persisted longer in clay soil than that of loamy or sandy loam soil. Urea + sumithion and urea + nogos showed a faster degradation in soils than that of sumithion or nogos alone. The half-life time of sumithion and nogos varied from 10 to 14 days. The rate of degradation was well fitted to the regression lines.

Objectives:

To study the residues of pesticides in Bangladesh soils.

Methodology:

Three soils representing the Ghatail, Sonatala and Belabo series were collected from Farmer's field, BAU farm and Madhupur forest areas, respectively at 0-15 cm depth. The soils were dried at room temperature and ground to pass through the 10-mesh sieve, and used in the experiment. Two commercial pesticides (1) sumithion and (2) nogos were applied in the experiment. They were collected from local dealer. Urea was used as fertilizer, and collected from local dealer. Each 500 gm soil of Ghatail, Sonatala or Belabo series were treated with sumithion, nogos and urea at the recommended doses (RD). and the combinations are given here (1) sumithion (RD), (2) urea + sumithion (RD), (3) nogos and (4) urea + nogos (RD). In another experiment only BAU Farm soil (Sonatala series) was treated with two times (2R) and four times (4R) recommend doses of sumithion and nogos. The required amount of each pesticide was first diluted in 1 ml of hexane, applied to soils in plastic dish, mixed thoroughly and again mixed uniformly with distilled water to create field capacity condition of soils. The treated soils were then transferred to plastic containers, fixed with lids and kept at room temperature (34 ± 2°C) for 20 days. The treated soil samples were collected after 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 15 and 20 days. After uniform mixing 20-25 gm soil was collected in each time for analysis of the residues of the compounds. Ten gm of each soil was extracted with 25 ml of Hexane-ether- dichloromethane-propanal (1:1:1:1:, v/v) for 30 min by shaking method, filtered and the procedure was repeated with another 25 ml solvent. The combined filtrates were evaporated to dryness, and transferred to 10 ml volumetric flask with hexane. 1-5 drops of extract were applied to TLC plates and then determined the residues by standard TLC method.
