Validation Trial on the Rhizome Rot Disease Management Technology of Ginger

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A validation trial was conducted to test the effectiveness of developed technology “application of Chlorox (10%) as seed dresser + Soil treatment with SBP (20kg/ha) + Soil drenching with Chlorox & Ridomil alternately for 5 times” for controlling rhizome rot disease of ginger at Nilphamari, Rangpur, Bogra, Madhupur and Khagrachari during 2013-14 cropping season. The germination of gingerwas observed ranged from 78.0 to96.0% in the validation trials. The rhizome rot disease incidence was comparatively low when a combination of seed treatment with 10.0% Chlorox + Soil treatment with SBP (20kg/ha) + Soil drenching with Chlorox and Ridomil Gold alternately applied for 5 times. The highest yield 24.8 t/ha was achieved at Bogra followed by 23.6 t/ha at Rangpur, 23.2 t/ha Nilphamari, 22.6 t/ha at Madhupur and 21.24a t/ha in Ramgarh using the developed technology.

Objectives:

The validation trial has been undertaken to prove the developed technology of the rhizome rot disease management under farmers’ field condition.

Methodology:

A validation trial was conducted in farmer's fields with 2 treatments during 2013-14 cropping season at Nilphamari, Rangpur, Bogra, Madhupur (Tangail) and Ramgarh (Khagrachari). The treatments were: T₁= Seed treatment with Clorox, 10% + Soil treatment with SBP (20kg/ha) + Soil drenching with Clorox & Ridomil alternately for 5 times obtained as promising in the second year results. and T₂= Untreated control. The trial was replicated thrice in each location and paired plot design was followed. BARI Ada-1 was sown at Bogra, Nilphamari, Madhupur and Rangpur whereas local variety of ginger was grown at Ramgarh. The spacing was maintained 50 cm x 25 cm. Recommended fertilizer doses were applied following BARC fertilizer guide (Anon. 2012a) and proper intercultural operations were done for all experiments. Germination, disease incidence and yield data were collected. Necessary statistical analysis was performed.

Five validation trials were conducted using the package treatment (T₁= Seed treatment with Chlorox (10.0%) + Soil treatment with SBP (20kg/ha) + Soil drenching with Chlorox & Ridomil Gold alternately for 5 times in five locations gave encouraging performance both in relation to germination of ginger and reduction of rhizome rot irrespective of locations. The germination was noticed lower, less than 90.0% means 82.0% at Ramgarh. It was 96.0%, 94.0%, 95.0% and 97.0%, were found at Nilphamari, Rangpur, Bogra and Madhupur respectively in the treated plots. Comparatively less germination (78.0-89.0%) was recorded from control plots. Reduction of disease incidence was observed 57.33 %, 53.77 %, 53.00 %, 60.33 % and 57.00 % in the package treatment compared to untreated control plot at Nilphamari, Rangpur, Bogra, Madhupur and Ramgarh. in the combined application of Chlorox (10%) as seed dresser + Soil treatment with SBP (20kg/ha) + Soil drenching with Chlorox & Ridomil alternately for 5 times. Considering the yield, the highest yield 24.8 t/ha was recorded at Bogra followed by 23.6 t/ha at Rangpur, 23.2 t/ha Nilphamari, 22.6 t/ha at Madhupur and 21.24a t/ha in the above mentioned package treatment. The control treatment gave the lowest yield at all locations. It is clear from the results that 78.0-96.0% germination observed in the validation trials and the rhizome rot disease incidence was comparatively low when a combination of seed treatment with 10.0% Chlorox + Soil treatment with SBP (20kg/ha) + Soil drenching with Chlorox and Ridomil Gold alternately applied for 5 times. The present findings is supported by Anon (2006) who showed that, minimum disease incidence (16.40 %) was recorded by one hour seed treatment with Ridomil MZ (3g/l of water) followed by Indofil M-45 seed treatment (25.30 %). In addition Stable Bleaching Powder (12 kg/ha) mixed with in furrows at the time of planting could reduce the bacterial wilt of potato by 80.0 per cent. The above mentioned information is newly developed through project activity which could reduce rhizome rot disease of ginger and accelerate the yield in the country, if applied properly. In validation trial the benefit cost ratio was more than four folds (4.58) higher compared to untreated control treatment (T₁).
