Advanced Yield Trial of Eggplant Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the performance of seven selected advance eggplant lines was conducted at the experimental farm of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur, Bangladesh during the winter season of 2013-14. The line SM058B took minimum days to 50% plant flowering and days to first harvest (66.67 days and 96.67 days, respectively) and delayed flowering and harvesting line was SM077B (89.67 days and 120 days, respectively). The longest fruit (17.17 cm) was produced by SM058B and SM057 produced maximum diameter fruit (6.60 cm). The line SM058B also produced the highest marketable number of fruit/plant (25), while the lowest was recorded from SM077B (13) and at per marketable fruit weight/plant (2.90kg, 2.74kg, 2.77kg) were found from SM057, SM058B, SM063A lines, while the lowest at per marketable fruit weight/ plant (1.76 kg, and 1.89kg) were produced in SM077B and SM075 lines. The heaviest fruit was obtained by the line SM063A (184.90g), where as the lightest fruit was obtained by SM058B (109.90g).Minimum infestation (250 g infested fruit/ plant) by fruit and shoot borer was observed in SM077B. The lines SM057, SM058B and SM063A were produced significantly at per higher yield (37.72, 35.73 and 36.08 t/ha respectively), while least were in SM057 and SM077B (24.62 and 22.85 t/ha respectively.) The results raveled that the lines SM057, SM058B and SM063A were found promising for earliness, high yield and pest resistance and may be recommended for RYT.

Objectives:

To study the performance of the selected eggplant lines

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the winter season of 2013-14. Seven eggplant lines viz., SM048, SM057, SM058B, SM063A, SM063B, SM075. SM077B were included in the study. The seeds were sown on the seedbed on 16 September,2013. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 15 October, 2013. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 7.5 x 0.70 m and 10 plants were accommodated in a plot with a plant spacing of 75 cm apart in single row maintaining a row to row distance of 1m with 30 cm drain. The land was fertilized with cowdung, urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc and borax @ 15,000 375, 150, 250, 100, 12 and 10 kg/ha, respectively. One third of the cow-dung and half of TSP and full of gypsum, zinc and borax were applied during final land preparation. Rest of cow-dung and TSP and 1/3 of MoP were applied as basal in pit. One fifth of urea and MoP were applied after 20 days of transplanting. After that, rest of urea and MoP were applied in equal four installments at 20 days interval. Irrigation, weeding, crop protection measures and other intercultural operations were done following standard practice. Data on days to 50% plant flowering, days to 1st harvest, fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), marketable fruit (no./ plant), marketable fruit wt./ plant (kg), average fruit wt. (g), yield (t/ha), plant height at last harvest (cm), and infested fruit wt./ plant (g) were recorded from seven randomly selected plants per entry per replication. The information on different characters was statistically analyzed.

Considering earliness, high yield and pest resistance, the lines SM057, SM058B and SM063A were found promising and may be recommended for RYT.
