Farmers Livelihood Due to Salinity Intrusion in Morelganj Upazila of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted in three villages of Morelgonj under Bagerhat district during December, 2013 to January, 2014, to know the salinity status, select the salinity tolerant crops and measure the farmer’s livelihood adaptation pattern in the selected villages of the study area. Considering 60 householders as respondents (sampling size was 20% of the total population) multistage stratified random sampling procedure was under majority of the respondents (92%) were male and majority were primary school level. Considerable member of the respondents were small farmers (32%) and marginal farmer (28%). Negative impact was found of salinity on 'agricultural crops' and 'plantation crops'. Salinity increased on the May-June and March-April in the study area. Some crops damaged there- by reduced cropping intensity due to salinity for the said months and this situation was unchanged for the past 20 to 30 years. Farmers were not aware about the saline tolerant crops or crop varieties and also endangered crops in the study area.

Objectives:

To know the salinity status in the selected villages of the study area and
To measure the farmers livelihood adaptation pattern in the study area.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in three villages (Vasandal, Umajuri and Nisanbaria) under Nisanbaria union of Morelganj upazila in Bagerhat district located at 22.4500°N 89.8583°E (Source), during the period of December, 2013 to January, 2014. Multistage stratified random sampling procedure was used to collect the sample from purposively selected three villages out of 183 through pre-tested structural and semi-structural questionnaire contained both open and close ended form of questions. The interview schedule was carefully designed in English with a view to keeping the objectives of the study. Face to face interview and focus group discussion (FGD) was followed to collect the data. Before going to make an actual interview, a brief introduction of the aims and objectives of the study were explained to each farmer. FGD were also used for the purpose of validation of collected raw data and collection of other necessary information of climate change. The population was 300 (DAE, 2013). Sixty (60) households (sampling rate 20%) of three villages were interviewed.

Achievement/Findings:

Salinity is a worldwide problem. Bangladesh is no exception to it. In Bangladesh, salinization is one of the major natural hazards hampering crop production. Coastal area in Bangladesh constitutes 20% of the country of which about 53% are affected by different degrees of salinity. Agricultural land use in these areas is very poor. Declining land productivity with shift towards negative nutrient balance is among the main concerns with food security problem in the country. Thus combating land salinization problem is vital for food security in the country through adoption of long-term land management strategy.

Farmers livelihood adaptation due to salinity intrusion in Morelganj upazila under Bagerhat district, Bangladesh the study under taken to draw the following conclusion.

Negative impact of salinity on 'agricultural crops' and 'plantation crops'.
Salinity increased on the May-June and March-April in the study area. Some crops damaged there- by reduced cropping intensity due to salinity for the said months and this situation was unchanged for the past 20 to 30 years.
Farmers were not aware about the saline tolerant crops or crop varieties and also endangered crops in the study area.

Farmers had slightly improved their purchasing power and getting balanced food nutrition than earlier through adaptation in salinity condition but educational facilities was not the expected level.
