Growth, Yield and Nutrient Uptake of Deepwater Rice as Affected by Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This was a study to see the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus application on the growth, yield and nutrient uptake of deepwater rice in a farmer's field at Jhitka, Manikganj. There were eight treatments comprising two rates of N and four rates of P application. The rates for N were 0 and 60 kg N/ha, and for P were 0, 20, 40 and 60 kg P₂0₅/ha. Basal dose of 40 kg K₂0/ha and 25 kg S/ha was applied to all plots. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization significantly increased the number of fertile tilters/m² and grains/panicle which in turn resulted in significant increase in grain yield of rice. The highest grain yield was obtained with 60 kg N and 60 kg P₂0₅/ha application showing a 44% yield increase over the control. The application of 60 kg N/ha alone gave 22% yield benefit over control. Protein content in rice grain did not decrease even with higher yield of rice due to added fertilizers. Phosphorus uptake by the crop showed that a large portion of phosphorus remained in the soil after harvest of the crop. The study indicates that application of N and P is essential for deepwater cultivation in this soil.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different rates of N and P on the growth, yield and nutrient uptake of deepwater rice plants.

Methodology:

The experiment was set up in a farmer's field at Jhitka, Manikganj in an alluvial soil flooded by the river Jamuna during the period from April, 1994 to November, 1994. The soil was silt loam having pH, 6.8; total-N, 0.09%; Olsen's P, 12.6 ppm; NH₄0Ac extractable K, 0.27 me% and CaCI₂ extractable S, 13.4 ppm. The variety of deepwater rice was Molladigha. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with four replications. There were eight treatment combinations obtained from two rates of N and four rates of P. The rates of N were 0 and 60 kg N/ha; that of P being 0, 20, 40 and 60 kg P₂0₅/ha. Basal dose of 40 kg K₂0/ha and 25 kg S/ha was applied to all plots. Urea was applied for nitrogen, TSP for phosphorus, MP for potassium and gypsum for sulphur. The full doses of TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen was added in two equal splits- the first split during final land preparation and the remaining at 45 days of sowing. Intercultural operations such as weeding and pesticide application were done as and when required. The crop was harvested at maturity. Both grain and straw were analyzed for N after digestion with conc. H₂S0₄ and catalyst mixture; P, K and S after digestion in HN0₃ + HCI0₄. Nutrient uptake by grain and straw was calculated from the yield and nutrient content data.

Achievement/Findings:

The results suggested that an application of 60 kg N/ha combined with 60 kg P₂0₅/ha may be applied to increase the fertile tiller, filled grains/panicle and grain yield of deepwater rice.
