Advanced Yield Trial of Tomato Lines for Processing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An advance yield trial (AYT) of four processing tomato lines of AVRDC with check BARI Tomato-3 was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the winter season of 2013-14. Satisfactory fruit yield per plant was recorded from the all GPT lines which were ranged from 2.28 to 3.63 kg. The highest fruit yield per hectare was obtained 77.23 tons from the line GPT017 followed by GPT009 (71.04 tones). All the GPT lines showed good shelf life that was ranged from 7-10 days. Virus infection percentage was nil in the experiment field. One of the main criteria of processing tomato is viscosity, which was ranged from 2.50 to 3.70 Cp in GPT lines while highest value (7.05 Cp) showed in BARI Tomato-3. All the GPT lines may be recommended for regional yield trial (RYT) to assess the yield potentiality and adaptability in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of AVRDC supplied processing tomato lines to develop new processing tomato variety in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of HRC, BARI during the winter season of 2013-2014. The AVRDC supplied four processing tomato lines viz.: GPT009, GPT011, GPT015, GPT017 and BARI Tomato-3 (as check) were considered as the materials for this study. The seeds of above mentioned lines and varieties were sown in the seedbed on 20 October, 2013. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot on 19 November, 2013. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications having plot size of 4.8x1 m providing a spacing of 60x40 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, urea 550kg, TSP 450kg and MoP 250kg per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire TSP and half of the MoP were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of MoP and entire urea were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on days to first and 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days to maturity, number of fruit /plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield /plant, yield/ plot, yield /ha, number of seeds per fruit, shelf life, percent virus infection (at 45 DAS, 60 DAS and 75 DAS), viscosity, (measured following Bost wick consist meter method USDA,1991), acidity and other processing quality were recorded. The collected data on aforementioned parameters were statistically analyzed and the mean separation was calculated following LSD (Zamanet al., 1982).

Considering the yield and other horticultural traits, all the GPT lines may be recommended for RYT to study the yield potentiality at different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh.
