Quality and Labeling Standards of Processed Food Products

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This article focuses on quality and labeling standards of processed food products in Bangladesh and international aspects. For standard of quality of food having some mended policing rule authorized by BSTI. Some international standard authorized organizations are ISO, FDA etc these are not compulsory for Bangladeshi goods but if any food maintain these standard it will better for marketing and consumers satisfaction. In case of standard labeling BSTI has some rule these are mandatory for Bangladeshi goods and other Codex standard rule for labeling but not mended for Bangladeshi goods. This article is review research by the experience of authors and reviewing related research and book review.

Objectives:

To narrate quality and labeling standard of processed food product.
To generate idea for international standard as well as Bangladeshi standard for packaging and labeling of processed food products

Methodology:

This article is narrative reviewed by the author’s experience, existing theories and modals. Here the author’s provide the information based on the reviewing book, scientific journal, national and international news paper cutting as well as the concern websites. Also information collection from nation and international organization, eg., Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), ISO, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), etc. Results were based on qualitative rather than quantitative level.

Achievement/Findings:

Customers can have more demands regarding food products e.g. packaging design, labeling etc which known as extra quality demands.

The complete agro-food chain needs to consider and take responsibility towards food safety in agricultural sector, transformation and distribution as well. On the other hand the consumer can play an important role in contributing towards food qualities by respecting refrigerating temperatures during storage, respecting shelf-life, preventing cross contamination during preparation of the food and provided no undercooking of raw meat, fish, vegetables, etc. However, this review focuses on (i) the present rules and regulation of handling food quality , (ii) some recent potential chemical labeling aspects arises in food packaging and (iii) some perception that should establish in Bangladesh to about labeling and quality standards aspects.
