Growth and Yield of Sweet Orange as Influenced by Timing of Fertilizer Application and Method of Irrigation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was carried out at the experimental field of IWM Division, BARI, Gazipur to determine the appropriate timing of fertilizer application and the irrigation method on the growth yield of sweat orange. Results of this study indicated that the height and stem diameter were not observed significantly difference among the treatments. But, they were found greater in treatment T₄ with drip irrigation at five days interval with fertilization at two months interval than that of other treatments.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A new orchard of sweet orange was established at IWM research field, BARI, Gazipur. One year old grafted saplings of sweet orange (BARI Malta-1) were planted on 14 October, 2012. Manures and fertilizers were applied as per treatments. The experiment was designed with five treatments replicated in five. The treatments were: T₁ = Rainfed (normal practice), T₂ = Irrigation at 10 days interval by ring basin method (November-May) with recommended fertilizer applied two times in a year, T₃ = Irrigation at 15 days interval by ring basin method (November-May) with recommended fertilizer applied four times in a year, T₄= Drip irrigation at five days interval (November-May) with fertilizer application at two months interval, T₅= Drip irrigation at five days interval (November-May) with fertilizer application at once in a month. The fertilizers were applied in dibbling method. Irrigation were done in drip and ring basin method as per treatments. The growth and physiological data are being recorded. Measured amount of irrigation water were applied as per method for treatments. Data were recorded and statistically analyzed

Treatments

T₁ = Rainfed (normal practice)

T₂ = Irrigation at 10 days interval by ring basin method (November-May) with recommended fertilizer applied two times in a year

T₃ = Irrigation at 15 days interval by ring basin method (November-May) with recommended fertilizer applied four times in a year

T₄= Drip irrigation at five days interval (November-May) with fertilizer application at two months interval

T₅= Drip irrigation at five days interval (November-May) with fertilizer application once in a month

Recommended dose of fertilizers were applied. Each plant has two drippers for drip irrigation system. Irrigation water was applied to each plant according to the treatments to maintain the soil moisture content up to the field capacity. The growth data like plant height, stem diameter and new flash (data not shown) were recorded once in a month

Achievement/Findings:

The irrigation methods under consideration were the well watered and controlled. The assessment period was from November 2012 to May 2014. Irrigation methods were compared in terms of stem diameter and height, growth rate and fruit. After receiving the same total effective rainfall amount, the irrigation water received. The drainage losses could be reduced if the drip irrigation method is followed. The variation of bearing is also started among the treatments due to the effect of timing of fertilizer application and the irrigation method. Among the treatments, treatment T₄ seems to be an irrigation strategy that was better irrigation with fertilizer application without affecting tree growth.
