Effect of Harvesting Stage and Post Harvest Ripening on the Seed Quality of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the research field of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2012-2013 to find out the effect of harvesting stage and after ripening period of fruits on the seed quality of tomato(var. BARI Tomato 14 and 15). The highest germination percentage, seedling dry weight and vigour index was recorded at half ripe stage of fruit harvest and zero days post harvest after ripening period. The highest germination percentage, seedling dry weight and vigour index was also recorded when fruit harvested at full ripe stage, zero days post harvest ripening period for BARI Tomato 14.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of harvesting stage and after ripening period of fruits on the seed quality of tomato(var. BARI Tomato 14 and 15

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the research field of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period of October 2012 to May 2013. The treatments comprising four stages of harvest viz. i) Mature green(showing light colour) ii)Turning(1/4 of the fruit showing pink) iii) Half ripe(3/4 of the fruit showing pink) and iv) Full ripe(Fully coloured and soft) and four levels after ripening storage viz. 0, 2, 4 and 6 days under ambient condition. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) in the field and completely randomized design under laboratory conditions with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 1m. Plant spacing was 60cm x 50cm. The fertilizer NPK@ 253, 90, 125kg/ha were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP along with cow dung 10t/ha. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire TSP and half of the MP were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during bed preparation. The rest of MP and entire urea were applied at three equal installments at 15, 35 and 55 days after transplanting. Irrigation, pruning, mulching weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded in the laboratory for different parameters of seed quality. Achievement/Findings:

The present investigation revealed that harvesting of fruits at full ripe stage, post harvest ripening period at zero days with BARI Tomato 14 produced highest quality seeds of tomato. From the above discussion it is revealed that for quality seed production tomato should be harvested turning stage to full ripening stage and seed can be extracted immediately after harvest without any post harvest ripening.
