Advanced Yield Trial of Ty Gene Inserted Cherry Tomato Lines for Yield and Diseases Resistance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An advanced yield trial of two selected cherry tomato lines of AVRDC and one advance cherry tomato line with check BARI Tomato-11 was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the winter season of the year of 2013-14. The highest fruit yield per plant was recorded from the line SL0012 (3.77 kg) followed by SL0011 (3.57 kg). Maximum fruit yield per hectare (86.38 tones) was obtained from the line SL0012. Long shelf life was observed (22-31 days) in all the cherry tomato lines. No virus infection was found to occur in the tomato plants of all the lines studied. The selected lines may be put in to regional yield trial (RYT) to confirm the result and to assess the yield performance at different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of the AVRDC supplied selected potential cherry tomato lines (Beta carotene rich) to develop high yielding and diseases resistant cherry tomato varieties in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of HRC, BARI during winter season of 2013-2014. The selected (selection was made in the year of 2012-2013) AVRDC supplied tomato lines viz.: SL0011, SL0012, one advanced cherry tomato line (China cherry) were selected for this study, while BARI Tomato-11 was used as check. The seeds of above mentioned lines and variety were sown in the on 20 October, 2013. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot on 19 November, 2013. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications having plot size of 4.8x1 m providing a spacing of 60x40 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, urea 550kg, TSP 450kg and MoP 250kg per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire TSP and half of the MoP were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of MoP and entire urea were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on days to first and 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days to maturity, number of fruit /plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield /plant, yield/ plot, yield /ha, number of seeds per fruit, shelf life and percent of virus infestation (at 45 DAS, 60 DAS and 75 DAS) were recorded. The collected data on aforementioned parameters were statistically analyzed and the mean separation was calculated following LSD (Zamanet al., 1982).

Considering the earliness, qualitative traits, pest and diseases reactions and yield potentials in unit area, SL0011, SL0012 and China cherry may be selected for put into regional yield trial to confirm the results and to assess the yield potentiality at different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.
