Assessment of Water Quality of Patuakhali District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

River water samples were collected from different rivers of Galachipa and Dumki upazila of Patuakhalia district under the Agro-ecological zone (AEZ) No. 13 viz. Ganges Tidal Floodplain to evaluate their suitability as irrigation usages. The chemical analysis included pH, EC, anions (CO₃^2-, HCO₃^-, H₂PO₄^2- and SO₄^2-) and cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K). All river water were acidic to slightly alkaline in reaction (pH 6.06 to 6.98) and 26 sample were found ‘suitable’ for irrigation usages. On the basis of EC values all water samples were categorized as low to high salinity hazards. Among the 26 river water samples, the SSP status of 4 water samples belonged to ‘Good’ category and rest of 22 samples lied under excellent category, respectively. The water samples were classified as ‘moderately hard’, ‘hard’ and ‘very hard’ based on hardness (HT). The relationship between different water quality criteria like pH, EC, SAR, SSP and HT were established and dominant synergistic relationships were observed between the combinations such as pH vs SSP, pH vs SAR, EC vs SSP, EC vs SSR, SSP vs SAR and HT vs SAR.

Objectives:

Assessment of the concentration of different cations and anions of river water to evaluate the quality of river water for the purpose of irrigation usages and to determine the inter-ionic relationship

Methodology:

Twenty six river water samples of Galachipa and Dumki upazila under Patuakhali district were randomly collected from river. The two upazila of Patuakhali were covered to collect the water samples. In the study area, there was no deep tubewell water for irrigating crops. Before sampling, containers were again rinsed 3 to 4 times with water to be sampled. In case of river, water samples were drawn from the mid-stream and few centimeters below the surface. The collected samples were tightly sealed immediately to avoid exposure to air. Samples were filtered through Whatman no.l filter paper to remove undesirable solid and suspended materials. The analysis was conducted within few days. The water samples after proper marking and labeling were carried to the Humboldt Soil testing laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. The samples were analyzed as early as possible on arrival at the laboratory. Water sampling techniques were followed as outlined by Hunt and Wilson (1986) and Clesceri et al. (1989). The chemical constituents considered for analysis were as follows: i) pH, ii) Electrical conductivity (EC), iii) Calcium (Ca), iv) Magnesium (Mg), v) Potassium (K), vi) Sodium (Na), vii) Phosphorus (H₂PO₄^2-), viii) Carbonate (CO₃^2-), ix) Bicarbonate (HCO₃^-), Most of the chemical analyses of water samples were conducted in the BAU Humbold Soil Testing laboratory, Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Rivers of Galachipa and Dumki upazila of Patuakhalia district are good to excellent category and all the river water samples were suitable for irrigation.
