Physico-chemical and Biological Properties of Some Soil Types of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to evaluate the status of physico-chemical and biological properties of soils from fourteen selected regions of Bangladesh during November, 2009. Forty two representative surface soil samples (0-15 cm depth) were collected from randomly selected 14 regions (three samples from each region) of Bangladesh. The results obtained from this study were showed that the pH of these soils were medium to strongly alkaline (3.45 to 8.17) in reaction, high in EC (1.31 to 17.13 dSm^-1) and very low to very high in organic matter (0.65 to 28.25%). The Pb, Dp, MWHC and soil porosity were varied from (1.64 to 3.21 g cm-3), (0.56 to 1.4 g cm^-3), (24.49 to 63.45%) and (28.72 to 82.53%) with the mean values of (2.14 g cm^-3), (1.16 g cm^-3), (44.73%) and (43.79%) respectively. Bacterial population ranged from (2.63 × 107 to 8.14 × 107 g^-1 soil) in all the study area. Among the parameters, the remarkable significant correlations existed between OM vs total N, EC vs soil pH, bacterial colony g^-1 soil vs soil pH and bacterial colony g^-1 soil vs silt. The OM, soil pH, CEC, EC, total N and texture were found to be the dominant factors influencing not only the availability of macro and micro nutrients but also the bacterial population of soil. All the parameters either directly or indirectly influence the soil ecosystem although OM, soil pH, texture, CEC, EC, total N and bacterial colony remarkably influence the availability of different nutrients.

Objectives:

To evaluate the status of physico-chemical and biological properties of soils from fourteen selected regions of Bangladesh

Methodology:

Total 42 samples were collected from 14 selected regions of Bangladesh (three samples from each region) during November, 2009. The depth of soils collected ranged from 0-15 cm. The collected soil samples were tightly sealed as early as possible to avoid air exposure and then, half of the soil samples were oven dried. Thereafter, the processed soil samples were analyzed for their chemical properties as per standard methods suggested. Soil texture determination was carried out by hydrometer method as outlined. Particle density was measured by volumetric flask method. Bulk density was estimated by the help of a core sampler made of metal cylinders of known volume. Maximum water holding capacity was analyzed by the method described. Soil pH was determined by glass-electrode pH meter. Wet-oxidation method was used for the analysis of organic carbon and semi microkjeldahl method was used for the analysis of total nitrogen. EC was determined electrometrically and CEC was determined by ammonium acetate saturation method as described. The population of bacteria was counted by dilution plate method as described. The population was expressed g^-1 of soil. Correlation and completely randomized design (CRD-One factor) with three replications was followed for the experiment. The collected data were analyzed statistically by F-test to ascertain the soil quality and ranked by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
