Heterosis in Interspecific Brassica Hybrids Grown Under Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To select the suitable cross combination of B. juncea x B. Campestris hybrids, the experiment was carried out from November, 1998 to March, 1999 at the field laboratory of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202, Bangladesh. Tweleve B. juncea x B. Campestris hybrids were studied for some yield contributing morphological characters. Heterosis was estimated over mid parent and better parent. On the basis of the heterotic values, the hybrids RLM-514 x M-91, M-261 x Sampad, RLM- 514 x Sampad, RLM-514 x M-91, M-7 x Sampad, M-261 x Dholi, RLM- 514 x M-91 were found as the best for days to flowering, pollen sterility percentage, plant height, no. of secondary branches/plant, number of siliqua/plant, siliqua density and seed yield/plant.

Objectives:

To select the suitable cross combination of B. juncea x B. Campestris hybrids

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during November, 1998 to March, 1999 at the field laboratory, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202. It is located in the agro-ecological zone of the old Brahmaputra flood plain . The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH value of 6.5 . Twelve B. juncea x B. campestris hybrids were evaluated against their 7 parents for some yield contributing morphological characters. The plants were allowed to grow up to maturity. Weeding, watering and spraying of insecticide and fungicide were done accordingly to raise the crop plants. The experiment was carried out following a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The characters were, days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, no. of primary branche/plant, no. of secondary branches /plant, no. of siliqua per plant, siliqua density, siliqua length, no. of seeds per siliqua, seed yield/plant were studied. The heterotic values of the studied characters were estimated over mid parent and better parent.
