Genetic Diversity of Sixteen Tomato Varieties Grown at Sher- E-bangla Agricultural University

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of sixteen tomato varieties at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period of November 2012 to March 2013. The genotypes including varieties and breeding materials were given code numbers from V₁ to V₁₆. Maximum number o f bunch (13.7/plant), fruits (33.0/plant) and yield (2.2 kg/plant) were observed in V8 plants. On the other hand, V₁₁ was found to show field resistance against a number disease pathogens like Phytophthora infestans, Alternaria solani, Clavibacter michiganinsis, Tomato Mosaic Virus (TMV), Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus (TBSV), Septaria lycopersici. However, the resistance or tolerance whatever was found needs to be determined through specific race induced diseases under controlled environment.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of sixteen tomato varieties

Methodology:

Experiment was conducted at Horticultural Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agri cultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the month of November 2012 to March 2013 following Completely Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replication. The unit plot size was 2.4m x 1.0m. Seeds were sown on the seedbed in early October and seedlings were transplanted into the main fi eld on 6th November, 2012. Sixteen varieties coded V1 to V16 (Plate 1) were distributed randomly in the first, second and third blocks as per rules of the RCBD. The materials were collected from different sources of home and abroad. The plant spacing was 40 cm in rows of 60 cm row. Manures and fertilizers were applied as recommended by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (Mondal et al., 2011). Data were collected on plant height, number of bunch/plant, number of flower/plant, number of fruit/plant, days to fruiting (visual observation), single fruit weight, yield/plant and percentage of disease susceptibility. Infested pathogens were identified by observing visual symptoms. Infest ed leaves were collected for laboratory analysis. Leaf samples were sterilized with 5% NaOCl (Sodium hypochlorite) solution, to free from microorganisms on the surface (Sharma et. al., 1997). Sterilized leaves were pl aced on two-layer blotter, which was previously wetted with distilled water. Pathogen infected area was transferred to PDA plate (Potato Dextrose Agar plate) and after seven days microscopic observation were done under 40x magnification. In case of bacterial identification, surface sterilized leaf/stem/ fruit were kept in distilled water into beaker for 30 minutes. Bacterial oozing observed within this time. 0.1ml was taken from that stock solution with micro pipette then placed on NA (Nutrient Agar) plate and spread with L-shaped glass rod, observed for 48 hours. Bacterial colony was observed on NA plate. This colony was transferred to another NA plate with bacterial loop to get pure colony of bacteria. Collected data were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C program, mean was calculated and analysis of variance for each of treatment was represented by F-test. Differences between treatments were evaluated by Least Significance Difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance. Mean data were used to transform into rank positions as the highest degree of desirability and summed up the total rank point to identify the variety that performed best considering all the traits studied together.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that V₈ is the best variety for the higher yield followed by V₃. V₁₁ gave minimum yield and notified as worst variety. It is expected that identification of the best tomato varieties would be a major asset among the poor farmers in Bangladesh.
