Influence of Pinching on Growth and Yield of Snowball Chrysanthemum

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Horticulture Farm, Department of Horticulture Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, from October 2012 to March 2013 to evaluate the influence of pinching on vegetative growth, flower size and number of Snowball Chrysanthemum. Three level of pinching were done viz. P₀, no-pinching; P₁, once pinching and P₂, twice pinching and it was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Results showed the significant variation among all characteristics. Results also revealed the maximum chlorophyll content (12.8%) and leaf area (36.7 cm2) were obtained from P₂ respectively and the minimum chlorophyll content (11.3%) and leaf area (25.3 cm²) was observed from P₀respectively. Maximum number of flowers (21.4) was found from P₂ and minimum (9.8) was from P₀. Finally, twice pinching showed the good impact on flowering of chrysanthemum.

Objectives:

To evaluate the influence of pinching on vegetative growth, flower size and number of Snowball Chrysanthemum.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at Horticulture farm in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period of October 2012 to March 2013 to maximize the chrysanthemum flower size, quality and production through pinching. Suckers of chrysanthemum were collected from different Nursery of Dhaka with three treatments and treatments were laid out completely randomized design (CRD) along with three replications. Treatments were exerted and settled up for experiment in field conditions, and followed with no-pinching (P₀), once pinching (P₁) and twice pinching (P₂) respectively. ‘Snowball’ a chrysanthemum variety was selected (15 cm seedling height) and for most case, pinching was done in shoot apical meristem through hand in each replications. Decomposed cowdung (250 g/pot) and a little amount of inorganic fertilizer were applied at N:P:K @ 1:1:1 ratio. Irrigation were applied frequently by visual observation. Leaf area was determined by non-destructive technique using CL-202 Leaf Area Meter (USA) and mature leaf under the lower surface of plant was taken for measuring leaf area. Chlorophyll percentage was also measured by non-withering method using chlorophyll meter (SPAD) and full grown leaf under the lower surface of plant was obtained for measuring chlorophyll percentage by non-destructive method. Data were recorded in different days after pinching at 30 DAT, 50 DAT and 70 DAT respectively and calculated for statistical analysis in MSTAT-C software program. Mean comparisons was conducted and analysis of variance for each of treatment was represented by F-test. Differences between treatments were evaluated by Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Snowball chrysanthemum showed the significant variation by pinching treatments. However, twice pinching increased the branch and flower number but reduced the height of plant.
