Study on Morpho-physiological Characteristics of Six Papaya Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was conducted at Horticultural Farm in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, from August 2014 to December 2014 to evaluate the morpho-physiological characteristic on six papaya lines. Six lines were L₁, Line-1; L₂, Line-2; L₃, Line-3; L₄, Line-4; L₅, Line-5; L₆, Line-6 and showed significant variation among the lines. Plant height, leaf number, female flower, hermaphrodite flower, fruits number, single fruit weight, length of fruit and diameter of fruit were found best in Line-3 (L3). Maximum number of female (24.3) and number of hermaphrodite (6.6) flower and yield per plant (41.1 kg) respectively were documented in Line-3, where as minimum in Line-6 in both characters respectively. Line-4 showed highest number of male flower.

Objectives:

To evaluate the morpho-physiological characteristic on six papaya lines

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at Horticulture Farm in Horticulture Department, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University under the 2 abiotech lab, from 2014 to December, 2014 to identify the best line of papaya line. In the experiment six papaya lines were used namely L₁, Line-1; L₂, Line-2; L₃, Line-3; L₄, Line-4; L₅, Line-5 and L₆, Line-6. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with six replications. Seeds were collected from Advanced Seed Research and Biotechnology Center (ASRBC), ACI limited and were sown in mid February, 2014 in poly bags. Mist irrigation was provided 2-3 times a day and poly bags were placed in a shade condition and kept away from direct sunlight. Main field was prepared before transplanting of papaya seedling. Pit was previously prepared for seedling transplant. Pit was prepared by mixing well decomposed cowdung, soil, and decomposed hyacinth at a proportion of 1:1:1:1. Proper irrigation channel was made for supplying water into the main field. All data was collected from mature stage up to 120 days. Data on plant height, leaf number per plant, male and female flower per plant, hermaphrodite flower per plant, chlorophyll percent age, single fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruit per pl ant and yield per plant were recorded carefully. Chlorophyll percentage was measured by non-destructive method using chlorophyll meter (SPAD). Three full grown leaves under the lower surface of plant were obtained for measuring mean chlorophyll percentage of leaf. Collected data were analyzed using the Mstat-C program. Mean comparisons was conducted and analysis of variance for each of variety was represented by F-test. Differences between varieties were evaluated by Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.
