Production Program of Wheat and Mungbean in Char Land

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Production program of wheat varieties were conducted at Padma Char, Paba Under OFRD, Shyampur Rajshahi during rabi season 2011-12. The production was conducted with 3(three) wheat varieties viz., BARI Gom 24 (Prodip), BARl Gom 25 and BARl Gom 26. Each variety covered 2(two) Bigha of land in two different location of Padma Char. The variety BARl Gom 24 (Prodip) produced the highest yield (4.2t ha^-1) followed by BARl Gom 26 (3.97t ha^-1). In economic point of view, the highest gross margin (49,310 Tk ha^-1) and BCR (2.42) was also recorded in BARl Gom 24 follow by Com 26 (GM: 44,710 Tk ha-1; BCR:2.29) respectively.

Objectives:

To evaluate the new wheat varieties by the farmers comparing with their widely grown varieties, preservation and rapid dissemination of seeds of farmers preferred varieties through farmers to farmers and to increase varietals diversity.

Methodology:

The production program was carried out at the Padma Char, Paba under OFRD Shyampur Rajshahi during the rabi season of 2011-12. Before conducting the program, a discussion was done with the Padma char farmers. It was reveled that the farmers' of Char areas used local and low yielder varieties of Wheat and Mungbean. They also followed the poor management practices for their crop production. In that discussion, the farmers demanded high yielding varieties of existing crop so that they can get more yield and income. The tested wheat varieties were BARI Gom 24 (Prodip), BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 26. The program covered 6 six Bigha of land i.e each variety covered two Bigha of land. Seed rate was follow 120 kg /ha. One cooperator farmers was selected for three varieties. The seeds were treated with Porvex @2-3g/kg seed. Seeds were sown on 17-21 November 2011. The seed rate was used 120 kg ha^-1. The lands were fertilized as BARI recommended dose i.e.110-22-60-15-4-1, N-P-K-S-Zn-B kg ha^-1 in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc oxide and boric acid, respectively. Two third urea and all of other fertilizers were applied as basal during final land preparation and one third urea was top dressed after first irrigation i.e. 20 DAS. Irrigations were done at two times like, 20 DAS and 45 DAS. Affinity, a weedicide was sprayed after 5 days of 1^st irrigation to control the broad leaf weed. The crop was harvested on 05-10 March 2012. The seed yield and yield components of wheat were recorded and Mean data were tabulated. After harvesting of wheat BARI mung-6 was shown on last week of March 2012. But mungbean was damaged due to high temperature and no precipitation.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance of the wheat varieties were same in the Char land, among the three varieties, the highest yield was recorded in BARl Gom 24(4.2 t ha^-1) followed by BARI Gom 26(3.97t ha^-1). The lowest yield was obtained in BARI Gom 25(3.15t ha^-1). In economic point of view, the same variable cost(34,690 Tk ha^-1) are involved among the three varieties The highest gross margin (49.310Tk ha^-1) and BCR (2,42) was recorded in BARI Gom 24.
