Evaluation of Svatnet Pumpkin Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the experimental field of Vegetable Division, HRC, BARI, Joydebpur during 2013-14 to select suitable varieties to release as open pollinated variety or breeding lines to utilize in future breeding program of pumpkin. Varieties varied significantly for their response to days to first female flower open (DFF), node order of 1st female flower open (NFF) and per cent TSS (P<0.05). Of these, DFF ranged from 43-60, NFF 13-21 and TSS 6-9.9%. Varieties were similar for fruits/ plant, AvFWt, yield/ plant, yield/ ha and flesh thickness which ranged from 3-5, 1.9-2.7kg, 7.7-10.4kg, 15.1-20.3t and 2.6-3.5cm respectively (P>0.05). One variety SPK 003 was moderately susceptible (MS) to pumpkin virus and the rest four moderately resistant (MR).Considering different parameters studied four varieties SPK002, 003, 004 and 005 were found promising as variety or breeding lines which were selected for further confirmation of their performance.

Objectives:

To release pumpkin as open pollinated variety or breeding lines to utilize in future breeding program of pumpkin.

Methodology:

The study consisted of five pumpkin varieties collected from the SAARC center of Dhaka. The trial was established in a randomized complete block design with two replications. Each replication comprised of five plants. Seeds were sown in poly bag on November 08, 2013. Thirty seven days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on December 15, 2013.The unit plot size was 2.0x10.0 m maintaining 2.0 x 2.0 m plant spacing within the bed. Fifty cm drain was kept between the plots. The land was fertilized with cow dung, urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum and zinc @ 5000, 175, 150, 100 and 12 kg/ha respectively. Total amount of cow dung, TSP, gypsum and zinc and 1/3rd of MoP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of MoP was applied in two equal installations at 10 and 20 days after transplanting. Urea was applied in four equal installments at 10, 25, 40 and 55 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Selfing and selection process were followed on the basis of crop improvement procedure. Ten quantitative and qualitative characters which were days to 1st female flowering (DFF), node order of 1st female flowering (NFF), fruits per plant, average fruit weight (AvFWt) in kg, yield per plant in kg, yield per ha in tons, flesh thickness (Fl thick) in cm, per cent total soluble solid (TSS), virus incidence (DI) in percent, virus reaction and flesh color were recorded. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mean separation of genotypes were done using Tukey’s test through one-way ANOVA in MINITAB statistical software (version 15, Minitab Inc, State College, Pennsylvania, USA).

Achievement/Findings:

Two varieties SPK003 and 004 produced higher yield/ plant (9.5-10.4kg) while lower in the rest three (7.7-7.8kg). Considering all the parameters studied four varieties SPK002, 003, 004 and 005 were found promising as variety or breeding lines and were selected for further confirmation of their performance.
