Collection and Evaluation of Snake Gourd Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An evaluation of eleven genotypes of snake gourd was conducted at farm of Olericulture Division, HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the summer season of 20013-14. The germplasm BD 1630 took the minimum days to first female flower opening as well as insignificant differences with minimum days required to first harvest (51.33 days and 67.33 days, respectively), also produced the maximum fruit number per plant. The BD-4447 produced the longest fruit (40.62 cm). The line BD 4441 gave significantly higher yield per plant (11.53 kg) closely followed by BD 1630 (11.18 kg) and BD 1636 (9.00kg). The results of the present study revealed that the snake gourd genotypes BD 1630, BD 1636, BD 4441 and BD-4447 were found promising for earliness, high yield and longest fruit type and may be recommended for next year trail.

Objectives:

To evaluate germplasm of snake gourd to obtain a good variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during the summer season of 2013 with 11 lines of snake gourd. The seeds of these germplasms were sown on the polybag on 21 April 2013. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 21 May 2013. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 10 m x 1.0 m and 10 plants were accommodated in a plot with a plant spacing of 1.0 m apart in single row maintaining a row to row distance of 1.3 m. The land was fertilized with cowdung, urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc and borax @ 10,000, 180, 180, 150, 100, 12 and 10 kg/ha, respectively. One third of the cow-dung and half of TSP and full of gypsum, zinc and borax are to be applied during final land preparation. Rest of cow-dung and TSP and 1/3 of MoP were applied as basal in pit. Each of urea and MoP @ 50 kg/ha applied after 20 days of transplanting. After that, rest of urea and MoP in 3 and 2 equal installments respectively applied at 20 days interval. The intercultural operations (weeding, irrigation, insecticide spray etc.) were done as and when necessary. Data on days to 1st male flower open, days to 1st female flower open, node order of 1st male flower open, node order of 1st female flower open, days to 1st harvest, duration of harvest, number of fruits, individual fruit weight (g), yield (kg/pl), fruit length (cm) and fruit diameter (cm) were recorded from five randomly selected plants per entry per replication

Achievement/Findings:

Considering earliness, high yield, fruit color and acceptable fruit size and shape, four lines BD1630, BD 4441, BD 1636 and BD 4447 may be selected for further evaluation.
