Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

An experiment was carried out to determine the effects of unconventional wheat grass powder mix fish feed and commercial feed on the growth performances of Magur fry (Clarias batrachus) for a period of 113 days from 12 September to 19 January in the wet laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Fish feed was formulated using 10 % wheat grass power containing 16.63% protein, 8.4 % lipid and 41.74 % carbohydrate which was tested for growth performances compared with a commercial feed of 30%protein, in two treatments of T1 and T2. Each treatment was carried out with two replications. Average initial length and weight of magur fry was 6.03 (±0.64) and 5.68 (±0.48) cm and 2.09 (±0.56) and 1.75 (±0.41) g in T1 and T2 respectively. After 113 days of rearing the mean length gain of magur fry was 1.31 and 1.93 cm, mean weight gain was 1.02 and 2.61 g, percent weight gain was 48.68 and 149.31, SGR was 0.298 and 0.808, FCE was 0.01 and 0.04, survival rate was 83.33 and 36.67% and fish production was 382.11 and 222.08 kg/ha in T1 and T2 respectively. However, FCR was very high in the experiment. So the production was high in T1 and the survival rate was significantly high in T1. The present study suggests that the wheat grass powder has some special properties which have protected the fry from death having very low percentage of protein which has substantially increase the survivability of magur fry. Further in depth study need to be carried out to verify the result.

  1. To see the effects of wheat grass powder mixed feed on growth and survivality of magur fry and
  2. To compare the growth and survival rate of magur fry reared with commercial feed and wheat grass powder mixed feed.

Site and period of experiment: The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment was conducted for a period of 4 months from 12th September to 19th January 2012- 2013. Sources of fry and acclimation: Fry of Asian catfish (Clarias batrachus) were collected from the Sharnolota Agro Fisheries, Fulbaria, Mymensingh. Transportation of fry to the laboratory was accomplished in oxygenated plastic bag with great care to avoid stress and injury. The fish were acclimated to the pond condition into hapa at an ambient temperature ranging 25-300C for a period of 15 days at the beginning of the experiment. During the period of acclimation, adequate oxygen supply was maintained and fish were fed finely ground compound pelleted feed containing 35% protein twice daily at 9 am and 5 pm. Experimental design: The experiment started on 29th September 2012. Four plastic half drum of 90L capacity containing 70L water was used as experimental tanks. Some brick lets were kept at the bottom of the drum as biological filter. All drum were placed in a row to facilitate better observation and accessibility and contain aerator for proper oxygenation. Tap water was added time to time to maintain the water level same all the time. In this experiment there were two treatments T1, T2 and each treatment conducted with two replications R1, R2. For convenience the tanks were numbered as T1R1 , T1R2 , T2R1 ,T2R2 and allocated randomly. All drum contain few plastic pipes on the bottom for hiding and resting for the fish. The tanks were covered with netted frame to prevent the fish jumping or predatory animals attack. The fry of C. batrachus was allocated at a rate of 15 fish per tank. The fish was fed with formulated diet using wheat grass powder and commercial diet as control. The uneaten feed and faces was removed twice daily through syphoning. Selection of feed ingredients: The following ingredients were selected for formulation of experimental diets. 1. Fish meal 2. Wheat grass powder 3. Mustard oil cake 4. Rice bran 5. Maize bran 6. Wheat bran 7. Atta 8. Molasses and 9. Minerals and vitamin premix. Preparation of wheat grass powder: For production of wheat grass, at first ½ kg wheat seed were taken. Then it was washed properly and soaks into water for overnight. One pinch of salt was added in the water. Then it was kept into water for 12 hours. In the following morning the wheat was soaked and kept in a cloth bag for 24 hours. After that a layer of soil were taken into a tray and the wheat seed were spread over it. Then water was sprayed into the tray for two times per day (morning and evening) and covered it for 3-4 days. When the seedlings grown up, the cover was removed and water was sprayed over it for two times in a day. Feed preparation: For preparation of larvae feed all the dietary ingredients were ground finely and sieved thoroughly to a particle size of 0.5 mm mesh before weighting and pelletizing to obtain a homogenous mixture. After sieving all required ingredients along with the vitamin and mineral premixes were weighted as per formulation of experimental diets with the help of an electronic balance. The ingredients were mixed well and water was added to make the mixture moisten. This resultant dough was then passed through a 1.0 mm diameter hand pelleting machine. The resultant pellets were then sun dried by spreading on a tray. All the feeds were stored in airtight plastic bags for use latter. Measurement of water quality parameters: Temperature, pH, transparency, alkalinity, dissolve oxygen and total ammonia will be determined. Feeding rate and methods: Fish were fed experimental diets twice daily in the morning at 9 am and afternoon at 5 pm in two tanks T1R1 and T1R2 and commercial diet in two tanks T2R1 and T2R2 throughout the experimental period. Fishes in each tank were fed experimental diets daily at the rate of 10% of their body weight. The above amount was fixed after observing that fish were not interested more to have than this percent of feed of body weight. The feed supplied in a plastic net tray. The left over feed particles were removed 1 hour after feeding by siphoning and the water level was adjusted up to the mark by fresh water. Sampling procedure: Sampling was done every 15 days interval by the Scoop net and ten fishes were caught randomly from each tank and then length and weight of the individual fish were measured carefully. Weight was taken with an electronic compact balance (KD-S/F-en) and the length with a measuring cm scale. Immediately after recording the length and weight the fry were released in the respective tank. Growth parameters: The following parameters were used to evaluate the growth of fish such as length gain (cm), weight gain (g), percent weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), food conversion efficiency (FCE), survival rate (%), production (Kg/ha). Statistical analysis: Statistical analysis of collected data was performed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Comparison between treatment means was carried out by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (Duncan, 1955) to test the significance of variation between the treatment means. Standard error (SE) of the treatment means were calculated from the residual mean square in the analysis of variance. All statistical analysis were carried out by MS Excel 97 (version 7.0) and M-STAT-C statistical packages.
