Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

A study was carried out on the quality assessment of Thai koi (Anabas testudineus) and pangus (Pangasius hypophthalmus) cultured in seven farms at Muktagacha Upazilla in Mymensingh district. Six commercial feed viz Megha, Quality, New hope koi and pangus feed and three farm-made feeds were studied during mid-March to mid-May, 2014. Feed samples were collected from Rupali matsaya farm using Quality feed, Al-Amin fish farm using Megha feed, Hanif master farm using New hope feed and Rupali, Hanif, Kabil farm made own pangus feed. The collected feed samples were analyzed for proximate composition in the Fish Nutrition Laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture in the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The data on growth parameters were also collected from the farmers’ register. The highest protein content was observed in New Hope koi feed (26.93%) and pangus feed (26.60%). The lowest was found in Quality koi feed (21.35%) and Kabil farm-made pangus feed (12.53%). The lipid content was observed within 9.13-9.82% for koi feed and 7.35-8.54% for pangus feed. Carbohydrate, moisture and fibre contents were very close to each other for different feeds. Ash content of two farm-made feeds were found higher (>30%) than other feeds. The maximum final weight (133.85g) was observed by feeding Quality koi feed and Megha pangus feed (600g). The highest SGR attributed by feeding Quality koi feed (6.21%/ day) and also Quality pangus feed (3.13%/day). The best FCR 1.58 and 2.19 exhibited by Quality koi feed and Quality pangus feed respectively. The maximum production of koi (138.684 kg/dec/90days) and that of pangus (91.8 kg/dec/90days) was obtained by feeding Quality feed and Megha feed respectively. The BCR was best in Rupali farms for koi and pangus production using Quality feed and farm made feed respectively. Farm made-feed exhibited less production indicated lower quality feed than the commercial feed. But Rupali farm-made feed exhibited better growth and production for pangus indicated the better feed quality than other farm-made feeds.

i. To determine the proximate composition of aqua feed used by selected farmers of Muktagacha upazilla; and
ii. To assess the growth performance by using commercial feed and farm made feed to Thai pangus and only commercial feed to Thai koi.

Study area: The study was conducted at Muktagacha Upazilla of Mymensingh district. There are lots of fish farms in that area. The farmers cultured different species of fish. The Thai pangus and koi fish are cultured widely in that area. Culture technique and facilities of culture of those fishes are wide also. Thai koi and pangus culture are more profitable than other fish farming to the farmers. Farmers of the area use both the farm made and commercial fish feed in their farms. Four farmers were selected, three of them cultivate both the fishes and one farmer cultivate only the Thai pangus. Laboratory facilities: Proximate analysis of feed was carried out in the Fish Nutrition Laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture in the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. Collection of feed samples: The experiment on the quality assessment of fish feed was conducted for the period of three months from mid-February to mid-May, 2014. There are many commercial feeds which are used by the farmers for production of Thai koi and Thai pangus. Among the large number of commercial feed some of the feeds used in the present study were collected from different fish farms by the author himself. The Quality feed, the Megha feed and the New Hope feed which were used to fed Thai koi and pangus respectively by the three farmers. The Megha feed for Thai koi and pangus were collected from the Al-amin fish farm, the Quality feed for Thai koi and pangus were collected from the Rupali Matsaya farm, the New Hope feed for Thai koi and pangus were collected from the Hanif Fish farm. The farm-made feed for Thai pangus was collected from the Rupali Matsaya farm, Hanif Fish farm, Kabil fish farm. The farm-made feed was used only for pangus culture. After collection of feed samples, the samples were kept in a refrigerator in the laboratory and on a later date samples were analyzed for proximate composition. Preparation of the samples: The samples were taken from the refrigerator and kept in room temperature for few hours. Then the required amount of samples were finely ground by a mortar and kept in airtight container for subsequent chemical analysis. Analytical methods: The proximate composition of different commercial and farm made fish feeds were analyzed in duplicate according to standard procedure given in Association of Official Analytical Chemists. Calculation of Cost Benefit Ratio: Calculation of cost benefit analysis is an important aspect of any farms. The cost benefit analysis of the studied different Thai pangus and Thai koi farms in Muktagacha Upazila was conducted during the experimental period. Fixed cost, operating cost, total cost, revenue income and net profit were calculated and evaluated. Analysis: Simple statistical analyses were done. By this statistical analyses the proximate composition of feed, the growth parameters of Thai koi and pangus fish was calculated. The cost benefit analyses was also done with that statistical analyses.

Feed conversion ratio of Thai koi in different farms ranged between 1.58 and 2.85. The highest (2.85) feed conversion ratio was observed in case of New hope feed used by Hanif master fish farm and the lowest (1.58) feed conversion ratio was found in Quality feed used by Rupali matsaya farm. Feed conversion ratio of Thai pangus in different farms ranged between 2.19 and 4.09.The highest (4.09) feed conversion ratio was observed in case of Kabil farm using own farm made feed and the lowest (2.19) feed conversion ratio was found in case of Quality feed used by Rupali matsaya farm. The protein quality of all the factory made feed and farm made feed are not satisfactory. The Hanif and Kabil farm made feed contain low protein but Rupali farm made feed contain more protein content than the others. Some of them have satisfactory which have good production capability in fish farm. Thai koi fish show good result by feeding Quality feed in the Rupali matsaya farm. Among the farm made for Thai pangus Rupali farm made feed was found here best. Rupali farm made feed contain low Protein than commercial feed but the farmer use more farm made feed than commercial feed in search of greater financial benefit.
