Development of Inbred Lines of Maize Through Recycline

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Inbred line development is a prime importance for varietals improvement. To achieve this objective, nine sets like Set I: Pinnacle, Set II: 900M gold Set III: Wang 11; Set IV: Uttoron- 2; Set V: Shamnpan; and Set VI: Pacific 60; Set VII: P-271; Set VIII: QY -11; Set IX P-622 were improved to develop new inbred lilies through recycling method. In these study, 100,36,338,32, 76 and 60,40,28,40 selfed ears were obtained from above sets.

Objectives:

To develop new inbred lines through recycling method.

Methodology:

Nine commercial high yielding hybrids of Set I: Pinnacle, Set II: 900M gold ; Set III: Wang11; Set IV: Uttoron-2; Set V: Shampan; Set VI: Pacific 60; Set VII: P-271; Set VIII: QY -11; Set IX: P-622 which were used as base population. Total 1000 plants from each set were grown to develop S₁ generation. Row to row and plant to plant spacing was 100 and 20 cm. respectively. Row length was 5m.The seeds of set I, set II, Set III, and Set IV were sown on 20, 25, 14, 19 November and Set VII Set VIII and Set IX were sown on November 23, 2009 respectively. Set V and Set VI were sown on 3rd December 2009. Fertilizers were applied @ 120, 80, 80, 20, 5 Kg/ha of N, P₂O₅, K₂O, S and Zn, at flowering stage healthy, disease-free uniform plants were selected and selfed individually by hand with proper tagging.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 300 plants were selfed from each of the nine sets. During harvesting 100.36, 338, 32, 79 and 60, 40, 28, 40 selfed ears from set I, set II, set III, set IV and set V , Set VI, Set VII, Set VIII, Set IX were harvested from each population. Harvested ears were dried and preserved for future breeding purpose.
