Efficacy of Rodol for Controlling Rats

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to study the effectiveness of Rodol as organic rodenticide, supplied from Pesticide Company. In both “no choice” “choice” test no rat died within seven days but only one rat found external hemorrhage through anus. The average bait consumption per rat per day was 0.63g in case of “choice” test and the average bait consumption per rat per day was.1.31g for “no choice” test.

Objectives:

. The present study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Rodol for controlling rats

Methodology:

Two types of test were conducted for this study i.e. choice test and no choice test. Bandicoot rats, Bandicota bengalensis (Gray), were used as test animals. Bandicoot rats, Bandicota bengalensis (Gray), were collected by trapping from different poultry farms of Sreepur Upazilla, and were kept in 40 X 25 X 18 cm rearing cage in the laboratory. These rats were later used for conducting "Choice test". Rodol bait contains cellulose derived from corn cobs as an active ingredient. The choice feeding tests were conducted in the laboratory using 10 (5 male and 5 female) acclimatized adult rats. Six hours starved rats were exposed individually to bait in a food cup for 24 hours. Two food cups were provided to each animal, one cup containing 10g of rodol and the other containing 10g of plain wheat grains. Rodol was supplied for six consecutive days and the plain wheat grain was provided up to end of the experiment (up to 15 days). In the "no choice" test, rats were exposed individually only Rodol bait in a food cup for 24 hours and continued for seven days. Spilled bait material or wheat grains were collected in a paper placed beneath the cages and weighted in both the tests. Consumption of bait material or food and mortalities of the test rats were recorded every day.

Choice test: Out of ten rats, no rats died within 24 hours or wit in seven days. The average bait consumption per rat per day was very low i.e. 0.63g only. The average mortality was 70% for the both male and female rats. "No-choice" test: Out of ten rats, no rats died within 24 hours or within seven days. But after 4-5 days of feeding only one rat has been observed external hemorrhage through anus but rat did not die. After few days rat was able to recover himself. The average baits consumption per rat per day was.1.31g. The results of the present experiment indicated that Rodol was not an effective rodenticides up to the mark and this product/sample cannot be recommended for controlling field rats in Bangladesh.
