Evaluation of Selected Spinach Line

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with five selected spinach lines at the research field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during winter season of 2013-2014 to evaluate the yield performance of selected lines. The line SO- 0047 took the highest days (53) to 50% flowering, while the line SO-0051 took the lowest days (36). Maximum number of leaves (19.30) was recorded from the line SO-0011while minimum leaves number (9.10) was recorded from the line SO-0046. The highest leave length and breadth (38.10 cm and 16.10cm) was recorded from same line SO-0011. The highest marketable yield per plant (118.70g) was recorded from the line SO-0011 which was followed by the line SO-0047 (107.10g) and SO 0048 (111.00g) and the lowest yield (54.40g) per plan from SO 0051. The highest calculated yield per hectare (39.10t) was recorded from the line SO-0011 followed by the line SO-0047 (35.30t) and SO 0045 (36.60t), while the lowest was recorded from SO 0051 (28.30t). Considering late bolting nature, number of leaves and yield potentiality the lines SO 0011, SO- 0048 and SO- 0047 were selected for advancement.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield performance of selected lines of spinach.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, during winter season of 2013-2014. The seeds of selected five spinach lines were sown on 25 November, 2013 maintaining 15 x 15cm spacing. The land was fertilized with cowdung-urea-TSP-MoP @10000-200-100-150 kg/ha respectively. The entire quantity of cowdung, one third urea and all fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. The rest of urea was applied as top dress in two equal installments at 21, 28 and 35 days after sowing. Thinning, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Harvesting was done on 5 January, 2014. Data on days to 50% flowering, plant height (cm),no. of leaves/plant, leaf length (cm), leaf breadth (cm), marketable yield/plant (g), and yield (t/ha) were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Considering late bolting nature, number of leaves and yield potentiality the lies SO-0011, SO-0048, SO- 0047 were selected and may be recommended for further advancement.
