Simple Hydroponic Technique for Production of Selected Vegetable Crops

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Simple hydroponic for production of cucumber were conducted at the glass house of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during October 2013 March 2014. From the study it was found that that the plant height was higher in T₁ (216cm) treatment followed by T₂ (175cm) and lowest in T₃ (163cm).The days 1st male and female flowering was earlier T₁ (32 and 39 days) and late in T₃ (39 and 46 days) treatment. The days to first harvest was earlier in T₁ (47 days) followed by T₂ (51days), and late in T₃ (55 days). The number of fruits per plants was higher in T₁ (16) and lower in T₃ (9) treatment. The fruits size was large in T₁ treatment (7.4x4.1cm) and followed by T₂ (7.2x3.8cm) and small in T₃ treatment (6.3x 2.9 cm).The individual fruit weight is higher in T₂ treatment (164 g) followed by T₂ (130g) and lowest in T₃ (120g) treatments. The yield per plant of cucumber was high in T₁ (2.62kg) treatment and followed by T₂ (1.56kg) and lowest yield was found in T₃ (1.08kg).

Objectives:

To find out simple low cost method for hydroponic culture.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the glass house of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during October 2013 to March 2014. The study was set up in CRD design with three treatment and three replication .The treatments were T₁= Plastic Bucket, T₂= Earthen pot T₃= Styrofoam boxtominimize the cost of reduction low cost growing container was used . In hydroponic culture water circulating methods is costly, water non circulating methods were used for conducting the current research. The seedlings were grown in sponge block. The sponge were cut into 2.5 cm cube size, in the middle of the cube the seeds were sown after that foam were placed in a tray (60x80x25cm) containing 30L fresh water. A news paper was placed over the Styrofoam to control the evaporation of water. After germination the newspaper was removed. At two to three true leaf stages 10 to 20 cc nutrient solutions were added at an interval of 2 to 3 days. After 3 to 4 weeks the seedlings were transplanted in three different types of container namely earthen pot, Plastic bucket and Styrofoam box. Individual Each container contain 10 liter of water and 100 ml of each nutrient solution ‘A’ and’ B’ adding in the bucket. The composition of nutrient solution to prepare 1000 liters solution: Potassium hydrogen phosphate 263.00g; Potassium Nitrate=583.00g; Calcium Nitrate=100.00g; Magnesium sulphate=515.00g; EDTA iron=79.00g; Manganese sulphate=6.10g; Boric acid=1.70g; Copper sulphate=0.39g; Ammonium molybdate:0.37g; Zinc sulphate=0.44g.Seedling of cucumber were transplanted on November 15, 2012 and harvested up to March 2013.The intercultural operations such support the plant with nylon tape ,solution and acid adding etc. were done as and when necessary. The EC and pH were maintained 2.0 ds/m and 6.5, respectively. Data on Ec, PH, solution regularly and adjust EC and pH every days, temperature, yield and yield contributing parameters were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

The benefit cost return was higher in T₁ (1:1.75) treatment and lower in T₃ (1:0.13). So T₁ treatment was profitable than other two treatments. From the above study it was found that the plastic container with non circulating system of hydroponic was better than the earthen pot and Styrofoam box. So, plastic container was best for Hydroponic culture.
