Hybridization Program on Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seventy three cross combinations were done by single cross method at Regional Wheat Research Centre, BARI, Shyampur, Rajshahi during 2011-12 (November to April) for creation new genetic variability and improvement of short duration, drought tolerance and diseases resistance genotypes with high yielding capacity. 8452 F₁ seeds were collected from 901 heads among the all cross combination.

Objectives:

i. To create new genetic variability among the germplasm,

ii. To improve the short duration, drought tolerance and diseases resistance genotypes with high yield capacity, and

iii. To enrich the germplasm stock.

Methodology:

About seventy parental materials were selected for hybridization program on the basis of different yield and yield contributing characters. All genotypes were sown on three different dates for synchronization of their flowering times. Single cross were done among the genotypes. Emasculation were done just two days before of pollination dates. Skilled manpower and breeders of RWRC were directly involved for doing the emasculation and pollination on hybridization program.

Achievement/Findings:

8452 F₁seeds were collected from 901 heads among the 73 cross combination. The maximum 296 F₁ seeds and heads (20) were collected from CB-40 (BARl gom-26) X CB-90 (BAW-1051) cross combinations. The minimum 17 F₁ seeds were collected from CB-6 X DR-20 cross combination. All F₁ seeds were preserved for confirmation of F₁ in the next growing season.
