Bangladesh Promising Wheat Genotypes Screening Nursery-2 for Developing High Yielding Wheat Variety

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seventy lines of wheat including two check varieties Shatabdi and BARI Gom 26 were evaluated in the nursery of the Wheat Research Centre, Dinajpur and at Jessore under irrigated timely seeding (ITS) and irrigated late seeding (ILS) conditions. There were significant variations for all the traits and differences in yield and other characters between two seeding dates. The effect of seeding times revealed that, all traits were significantly influenced by seeding time. Days to maturity, thousand grain weight (TGW) and yield were higher under ITS condition whereas spikes per square meter and grains per spike were higher under ILS condition. The effect of location revealed thel traits to be significantly influenced by locations. Days to maturity were earlier (104 days) at Jessore and that was late (105 days) in Dinajpur. The number of spikes m^-2 was significantly higher (374) at Dinajpur followed by Jessore. All the yield contributing characters and yield were higher in Dinajpur than Jessore location.The highest yield (4485 Kg ha^-1) was recorded in Dinajpur. Dinajpur performed better compared to Jessore location. The performance of selected genotypes over locations and seeding times was statistically significant. All the selected genotypes matured earlier than the check variety Shatabdi. The lowest maturity day (102 days) was recorded in E-5. The highest number (387) of spikes m^-2 was recorded in E-4 and E-19. The highest number of grains spike^-1 (56) was recorded in E-19 followed by E-20. The highest TGW (51.9 g) was recorded in E-51. Almost all the selected entries produced higher yield than the check variety Shatabdi. The highest (5726 kg ha^-1) yield was recorded in E-20 followed by entry 19 (5637 kg ha^-1). Based on the overall performances,14 genotypes viz. E-4, E-5, E-8, E-14, E-15, E-19, E-20, E-23, E-27, E-39, E-49, E-51, E-54 and E-68 were selected for inclusion in preliminary yield trial (PYT) next year. The selected genotypes had high yield, bold and plump grains with better tolerance to Bipolaris leaf blight (BpLB) and resistant to leaf rust diseases.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of some promising wheat genotypes
To select high yielding, disease resistance, short stature, and early maturing suitable genotype(s) for inclusion in preliminary yield trial.

Methodology:

Sixty eight wheat genotypes mostly selected from last year’s F₆ at Joydebpur and rests from selected lines of international yield trials along with two checks were used in the study.The experiment was conducted under irrigated timely seeding (ITS) and irrigated late seeding (ILS) conditions at the Wheat Research Centre (WRC), Dinajpur and at Jessore. The experiment was planted in alpha-lattice design with 2 replications for each location. Unit plot size was 2.5m long 6 rows with 20 cm and 40 cm space between rows and entries, respectively. The ITS and ILS sets were seeded on 22-24 November and 23-25 December 2013 respectively. Data were recorded on visual sterility, disease reaction, different agronomic characters, grain yield and physical grain characteristics. At maturity, the whole plots were harvested to estimate yield. The collected data were statistically analyzed and the means were compared by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance of all genotypes, seeding times, locations and their different levels of interactions were statistically significant for different traits. Based on overall performances, 14 genotypes viz. E-4, E-5, E-8, E-14, E-15, E-19, E-20, E-23, E-27, E-39, E-49, E-51, E-54 and E-68 were selected for inclusion in the PYT next year.
