Preliminary Yield Trial of Exotic Potato Varieties in First Generation for Table and Processing Purposes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twelve potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) genotypes including three checks in randomized complete block design with three replications at Joydebpur, Munshigonj, Jessore, Bogra and Debigonj were evaluated in rabi 2013-14. The genotypes were evaluated for yield and yield components with objectives to estimate the nature and magnitude of GEl for tuber yield and to identify stable potato genotypes for general adaptation and unstable genotypes for specific adaptation. Combined analysis of variance showed highly significant difference between the genotypes, locations and GEl for all the characters studied. Genotype Bafana took the lowest time to start emergence and the emergence % at 30 DAP Verdi showed the highest although no entry performed better than the checks. Entry Camel produced more plant height, Number of stem per hill as well as foliage coverage. Bafana showed significantly the highest plant vigor followed by Figaro, Forza, Camel and Verdi. The entry Camel produced the highest yield where Modok produced the lowest. Verdi produced significantly the highest 22.20% dry matter followed by BARI Alu-28 (Lady Rosetta), Figaro and Bafana at 90 DAP.

Objectives:

To determine the yield potentiality, diseases and pest reactions and suitability as a commercial variety in Bangladesh

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at five locations of the country namely Joydebpur, Munshiganj, Jessore, Bogra and, Debiganj and during the Rabi season of 2013-14. Nine exotic potato varieties a received through different seed companies namely Camel, Yukon Gem, Modoc, Bafana, Figaro, Forza, Red Sunset, Teton Russet and Verdi with three check varieties BARI Alu-7 (Diamant), BARI Alu-25 (Asterix) and BARI Alu-28 (Lady Rosetta) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCRD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 3m. Well sprouted tubers were planted from mid November to first week of December 2013 maintaining the spacing 60 cm x 25 cm. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 10 ton, Urea-350 kg, TSP-220 kg, MP-260 kg, Gypsum-120 kg, Boric acid-15 kg and ZnSO₄-12 kg per hectare. Half of urea and full dose of other fertilizers were applied immediately before planting the seed in furrows and mixed properly with the soil. The rest amount of urea was applied as side dressing at 35 days after planting. Irrigation, weeding, earthing up and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary for raising a good crop. The crops were sprayed at regular interval with Dithane M-45, Secure and Admire to prevent diseases and insects. The crop was harvested from last week of February to first week of March 2014. Data were recorded on different parameters and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

This is a 1^st year trial. As the seed potatoes were collected from different countries (mainly from European countries) they might not expose their all characters completely. Therefore, no selection was done in this year. Seeds produced from the trial are kept for 2^nd year trial for more confirmation.
