Preliminary Yield Trial of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eighteen advanced lines along with check varieties Shatabdi and BARI Gom 26 were evaluated at WRC, Dinajpur, RWRC, Joydebpur and RARS, Jessore in RCBD factorial design with three replications under irrigated optimum and irrigated late sown conditions. The genotypes were evaluated for yield and yield components, heading, maturity, disease reaction, sterility, visual grain quality, etc. The highest yield was recorded in Dinajpur in ITS condition and that was lowest in same location in ILS condition. In both the sowing times Dinajpur produced the highest TGW than other locations. The highest yield (5623 kg/ha) was recorded in Dinajpur in check variety BARI Gom 26 and that was lowest also in same location in check variety Shatabdi. In all locations Shatabdi matured later than any other genotypes. Considering the overall performance, 8 genotypes BAW 1208, BAW 1209 BAW 1214, BAW 1217, BAW 1219, BAW 1220, BAW 1222, and BAW 1223 were finally selected for testing in AYT next year.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of the advanced lines compared to the existing check varieties and to select the promising lines for inclusion in the Advance Yield Trial (AYT)

Methodology:

The trial was conducted with 18 promising lines selected from HTWYT and BWSN last year (2012-13). The variety Shatabdi and BARI Gom 26 were used as checks. The experiment was laid out in RCBD factorial design with three replications at three locations (Dinajpur, Jessore and Joydebpur). The trial in each location was planted under irrigated timely sown (ITS) and irrigated late sown (ILS) conditions. Seeds were sown continuously in 5m long 8-rows plots with a row spacing of 20 cm. Recommended cultural practices were followed to raise the crop with irrigation. Data were recorded on different agronomic characters, diseases, sterility, Canopy Temperature, SPAD reading, NDVI reading, 1000-grain weight and visual seed characteristics. At maturity, the middle five-meter long five rows were harvested to estimate yield. The double-digit scores were converted to percent diseased leaf area (% DLA) for BpLB disease. The collected data were analyzed using Cropstat.

Achievement/Findings:

The effect of seeding times revealed that all traits except grains per spike were significantly influenced by seeding time. Days to maturity were earlier at late sowing condition. The numbers of spikes m^-2 were significantly higher at late sown condition but thousand grain wet (TGW) and grain yield were higher in ITS condition. The effect of location revealed that all traits were significantly influenced by the locations. Days to maturity were earlier at Joydebpur and that was late in Dinajpur. The number of spikes m^-2 was significantly higher at Dinajpur than Joydebpur location. All the yield contributing characters and yield were higher in Dinajpur than other locations. The highest yield was recorded in Dinajpur than Jessore which was statistically similar to Joydebpur location. Dinajpur was the best location compared to other locations. The Interaction effects of genotypes, locations and sowing times was significant for all the traits. The highest yield was recorded in Dinajpur in ITS condition and that was lowest in same location in ILS condition. In both the sowing times Dinajpur produced the highest TGW than other locations. Considering all the traits location Dinajpur and ITS condition gave the best results. Spikes per square meter and grains/spike were significantly influenced by the interaction effects of genotypes, locations and sowing times. The highest spikes m-² was obtained in ILS condition at Jessore (BAW 1224) whereas the lowest spikes m-² was observed in ITS condition at Joydebpur. All the genotypes produced higher spikes m-² in ILS condition at Joydebpur. The highest grains /spike was observed in late seeding condition at Dinajpur (BAW 1218) whereas the lowest grains/spike was observed in ITS condition at Joydebpur. Considering the overall performance, 8 genotypes BAW 1208, BAW 1209 BAW 1214, BAW 1217, BAW 1219, BAW 1220, BAW 1222, and BAW 1223 were finally selected for testing in AYT
