Effect of Organic Agricultural Waste and Safe Production of High Value Summer Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

After chemical assessment of different composts two experiments were set to standardize the dose of kitchen compost, vermin-compost, city-compost along with chemical fertilizers at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during summer 2012. High value crops summer tomato was tested with the BARI released variety BARI hybrid Tomato 8. It was revealed that summer tomato could be grown economically by reducing 25 percent of recommended chemical fertilizer. The produced vegetables were free from toxic substances after assessing from laboratories. Therefore, this findings may be used in the Good agriculture practices (GAP) as the blemish free summer tomato which is concerned to the consumers.

Objectives:

To standardize the dose of different compost along with chemical fertilizers which may use to grow safe vegetables under good agriculture practices( GAP).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the summer season of 2012. Eleven treatment were constructed with the fully matured compost for each evaluation, these were, T₁ = only chemical fertilizer ( cowdung-urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum and zinc sulphate @ 10t-175, 175, 150, 100 and 12 kg/ha), T₂= Vermi 1.5t/ha + 2/3rd RD , T₃=Vermi 1.5t/ha + ½ RD,T₄= Kitchen waste 3 t/ha + 2/3rd RD, T₅=Kitchen waste 3t/ha + ½ RD T₆= Vermi 1.5 t/ha, T₇=Kitchen waste 3t/ha T₈=No fertilizer. Randomised complete block design was followed with three replications for both experiments. The seeds of with BARI Hybrid Tomato 8 were sown in the seed bed on May 5, 2012. Seedlings were transplanted in the main field on May 30, 2012. The unit plot size was 3.6m x 2.3m accommodating 24 plants in each plot having 60 cm x 40 cm plant spacing. The crop was fertilized with urea 550kg, TSP 450kg and MoP 250 kg per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of compost, entire TSP and half of the MoP were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the compost was applied during pit preparation. The rest of MoP and entire urea were applied in three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting . The crop was protected from rain providing polythene tunnel. Irrigation, pruning, mulching weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded for some yield and yield contributing characters. The compiled data were subjected to statistical analysis for interpretation of results.

Achievement/Findings:

Results clearly indicated that application of Kitchen compost, Vermicompost compost significantly influenced summer tomato production. Significance differences were found in earliness while applied the different compost along with chemical fertilizers. Individual fruits weight also differed statistically with recommended dose (RD) of fertilizer while compared with different compost treatments. Plot treated with only compost reduced the fruit size , but fruits of good size were observed even in 25% reduction of RD. TSS (%) was influenced by the different compost. As higher TSS percent is desired during summer therefore, it is recommended for application Vermicompost or kitchen for improve the quality of tomato. Yield per plant was observed similar at 25 % reduction of chemical fertilizers and BCR was observed the highest in those treatment. Moreover, application of different compost along with chemical fertilizer increases the BCR through which growers may deposit the benefit.
