Fifth Csisa Heat Trial and Early Maturity of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The heat tolerant early maturing yield trial was conducted at RARS, Jessore and WRC, Dinajpur during rabi,2013-2014. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications with check variety Shatabdi. The entries were screened emphasizing the maturity days and yield. Out of 30 entries only 7 entries 16, 19, 20, 21, 26, 29, and 30 were selected comparing with check variety Shatabdi. The selected entries will be tested in the next year which may contribute to our national demand for early maturing, heat tolerant and high yielding wheat varieties.

Objectives:

, Objective of the trial was to screen promising lines of wheat with higher yield and disease resistance under Csisa Heat Trial and Early Maturity Heat stress condition

Methodology:

The trial was conducted with 30 genotypes including local check BARI gom 21 (Shatabdi) at the Wheat Research Centre, Dinajpur and RARS, Jessore. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 5m long 6 rows with row spacing of 20 cm. The trial was sown on 25 December at Dinajpur and 22 December at Jessore. Fertilizers were applied at N₁₀₀ P₂₇ K₅₀ S₂₀ B₁ kg ha^-1. The trial was irrigated thrice, at crown root initiation (CRI), booting and grain filling stages. Data were recorded on days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, TGW and grain yield and biomass. Five meter long middle four rows were harvested to record grain and biomass yield and then converted into kg ha^-1. The collected data were analyzed by statistically with Crop stat software program.

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes varied significantly for all the characters studied. Yield, heading days, plant height, physical grain characteristics were the most important selection criteria, so these were given most priority during selection. The lowest heading days (62.50) were exhibited by E-30 followed by E-19 and E-20. All of the selected genotypes were earlier heading than the check variety Shatabdi. The lowest maturity days (94.83) were recorded for E-30 followed by E-19, E-20 and E-21. Plant height of all the selected entries was significantly lower than the check variety. The lowest plant height (90.17) was obtained from E-21 followed by E-16. The highest TGW (40.37g) was recorded in E-29 followed by E-16. The highest grain yield (4652 kg ha^-1) was obtained by E-19 in both locations, Dinajpur (5203 kg ha^-1) and Jessore (3497 kg ha^-1). The highest mean yield was recorded followed by E-2.

The effect of location revealed that all traits were significantly influenced by locations. The crop matured earlier at Jessore and late at Dinajpur. The plant height and TGW was significantly higher at Dinajpur than Jessore. All the yield contributing characters and yield were higher in Dinajpur than Jessore. Dinajpur was the best location compared to Jessore for yield. Finally, seven entries viz. entry 16, 19, 20, 21, 26, 29 and 30 were selected on the basis of overall field performance and visual grain quality and heat tolerance
