Effect of Kitchen Organic Waste Compost and Vermi-compost in Combination with Chemical Fertilizer on the Safe Production of Cabbage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research was conducted with recommended dose of chemical fertilizer and combination of different type of organic fertilizer with cabbage variety (Atlas 70) at the research field of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during winter season of 2013-14. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The study was comprised of 8 treatments combination. The treatments differed significantly for their response to whole plant weight, head weight, head yield. There was no significant difference found in case of plant height. The highest whole plant weight and head weight were recorded from the treatment T₄ (3185 g and 2520 g, respectively) and the lowest from the treatment T₈ (2100 g and 1545 g, respectively). The treatment T4 also gave the highest head length (24.6 cm), head breadth (23.7 cm) and head yield (55.43 t/ha) compare to other treatments. Considering yield and yield contributing parameters treatment T₄ (Vermicompost 1.5t/ha + 2/3rd recommended dose of chemical fertilizer) was the best for cabbage cultivation.

Objectives:

To develop standard production method of cabbage under good agriculture practice( GAP).
To find out the suitable doses of different compost to grow cabbage economically.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at research field of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur, during the winter season of 2013. Cabbage was used as planting material. The seeds of cabbage variety (Atlas 70) were sown in the polybag on 01 November 2013. Twenty five days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 25 November, 2013. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. The study was comprised of 8 treatments combination. The treatment combination were i.e T₁ = Recommended dose of chemical fertilizers(RD),T₂= Kitchen waste 3 t/ha + 2/3rd RD, T₃=Kitchen waste 3t/ha + ½ RD, T₄= Vermi-compost 1.5t/ha + 2/3rd RD, T₅= Vermi-compost 1.5t/ha + ½ RD, T₆=kitchen waste 3t/ha, T₇= vermi-compost 1.5 t/ha,T₈=no fertilizer. The total amount of all chemical fertilizer except urea and MoP and all organic compost were applied during final land preparation in the pit. Total urea and MoP were applied in four equal installments at 21, 35, 55 and 75 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Data on plant height (cm), whole plant weight (g), head weight (g), head length (cm), head breadth (cm) and head yield (t/ha) were recorded from three randomly selected plants per treatment. The data on different characters was statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering yield and yield contributing parameter of cabbage, it may be concluded that organic fertilizer along with chemical fertilizer gave excellent response and it may be recommended that 1.5t Vermi-compost + 2/3 chemical fertilizer is best for cabbage cultivation.
