Effect of Kitchen Organic Waste Compost and Vermicompost in Combination with Chemical Fertilizer on the Safe Production of Broccoli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the winter of 2013-14. Commercial variety ‘Premium’ was used as planting material. The treatments differed significantly for their response to different parameter. The highest whole plant was recorded from the treatment T₂ (1628g), while 3 ton kitchen compost with combination of 2/3 chemical fertilizer was used which was followed by T₁, T₅ and T₆ treatment and the lowest whole plant wt. was recorded from the T₈ (Control) treatment. The heaviest marketable curd was received from T₂ (595.40 g) treatment which was followed by T₁ (503.30 g) and T₄ (522.20g) and lighter curd was received from T₆, T₇ and T₈ treatment. The highest per hectare marketable curd yield (14.29t) was recorded from T₂ treatment which followed by T₁ and T₄ treatment while lower marketable per hectare curd yield was recorded from T₆, T7 and T₈ treatment. From the result, it may be recommended that 3t/ha kitchen waste compost + 2/3 chemical fertilizer and 1.5t/ha Vermicompost + 2/3 chemical fertilizer was the best combinationfor broccoli production.

Objectives:

To see the performance of different organic and inorganic fertilizer on broccoli by maintaining good agricultural practice (GAP).

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the research experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during winter season of 2013-2014. Commercial variety “Premium” was used as planting material. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5 x 1m maintaining 50 x 40 cm spacing. The seeds were sown on seed bed on 2 November, 2013 and 30 days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 1 December, 2013. Recommended dose of chemical fertilizer urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum and ZnO at the rate of 220 kg, 330 kg, 200 kg, 110 kg and 5 kg per hectare, respectively were applied. Vermicompost and aerobically produced kitchen compost were prepared in the vegetables field. Eight treatment were constructed with fully matured compost for each evaluation, these were, T₁ = Recommended dose of chemical fertilizer (RD), T₂= 3t/ha Kitchen compost + 2/3rd chemical fertilizers (RD), T₃= 3t/ha + ½ chemical fertilizer (RD), T₄= 1.5t/ha Vermicompost + 2/3rd, T₅= 1.5 t Vermicompost + ½ chemical fertilizer (RD) T₆= Kitchen waste 3 t/ha, T₇=1.5 t/ha Vermicompost T₈= control. Half of the quantities of organic compost were applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of quantities of organic compost, the entire quantity of TSP, ZnO, gypsum and one third each of urea and MoP were applied during pit preparation.The remaining urea and MoP were applied in 3 equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations such as weeding, irrigation, mulching of pit etc. were done as and when necessary. Based on plant growth, curd weight, curd shape, size, compactness and colour 5 plants were selected from each replication. Data on different parameters such as plant height; whole plant wt. (g), curd length (cm), curd breadth (cm), marketable curd weight (g) and curd yield (ton) were recorded and statistically analyzed. The compiled data were subjected to statistical analysis for interpretation of results.

Achievement/Findings:

From the result it was concluded that 3t/ha Kitchen waste compost + 2/3 chemical fertilizer (RD), and 1.5t/ha Vermicompost + 2/3 chemical fertilizer (RD) gave excellent result as compared to chemical fertilizer. Moreover, BCR was also higher. So, it may be recommended that 3t/ha kitchen waste compost + 2/3 chemical fertilizer (RD) and 1.5t/ha Vermicompost + 2/3 chemical fertilizer (RD) was the best combination for broccoli production.
