An experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Department of Horticulture, BSMRAU to study the yield and other yield contributing characters of spinach at different nitrogen doses and harvesting frequencies. Four nitrogen doses viz. 50 kg/ha (N1), 100 kg/ha (N2), 150 kg/ha (N3) & 200 kg/ha (N4) along with control (N0) and three harvesting - single (H1), double (H2) and triple (H3) were used as treatments in the trial. The result revealed that harvesting frequencies and nitrogen doses differed significantly in all the parameters studied. Among the harvesting frequencies, highest leaf number/plant (33.40), leaf length (18.55 cm), leaf width (12.00 cm) and plant height (36.52 cm) were recorded in single harvest. Triple harvest performed lowest in all parameters in an average but the total of all the parameters were highest in triple harvest. Nitrogen dose N3 produced more leaves/plant (36.06), leaf length (17.01 cm), leaf width (11.16 cm) and plant height (35.06 cm). Total yield of spinach was enhanced by harvesting frequencies. The highest yield (37.31 t/ha) was produced by triple harvest followed by double (31.01 t/ha) and single harvest (21.64 t/ha). The highest total yield (40.14 t/ha) was obtained from the nitrogen dose 200 kg/ha (N4).The highest yield performance (52.90 t/ha) was recorded in triple harvest and 200 kg N/ha (N4H3). The combination of single harvest and control (no nitrogen) yielded the lowest (13.43 t/ha).

  • To find out the feasibility of repeated harvesting of spinach in Bangladesh condition
  • To find out the dose of N for single or repeated harvest

The experiment was carried out at the Research Field of Horticulture Department, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur, Bangladesh. As plant material spinach cv. All Green was used. The seeds were water soaked for 48 hours and dibbled in bed. Germination was completed within 10 days. Except nitrogen, all other fertilizers were applied @ 10 tons, 75 kg, 75 kg of cow dung, TSP and MP, respectively as recommended by Rashid, 1999. Necessary gap filling was done within a week after emergence of seedling. Harvesting of crops were started from 25th December and continued up to 4th February at 20 days interval. Treatments of the experiment were nitrogen doses - N1= 50 Kg N/ha, N2= 100 Kg N/ha, N3= 150 Kg N/ha, N4= 200 Kg N/ha, N0= Control (no N) and Number of harvests - H1= Single harvest (plants were harvested by uprooting at 55 days), H2 = Double harvest (plants were harvested keeping 5 cm from the base with meristem during 1st harvest) and H3 = Triple harvest (plants were harvested keeping 5 cm from the base with meristem during 1st and 2nd harvest and uprooted from the base 20 days after 2nd harvest). The design of the experiment was two factor Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.0m × 1.75 m = 3.5 m2. The row-to row and plant-to-plant distance were 25 cm (Leskovar et al., 2000). In each plot there were seven rows accommodating eight plants per row. Data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants in each plot. These selected plants were marked with bamboo sticks for easy identification. Data recorded in each plot were - average leaf number / plant, average leaf length (cm), average leaf width (cm), average plant height (cm) and total yield (t/ha).The data were analyzed by analysis using MSTAT-C statistical package and differences among the means were computed for significance following Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 1% level.

With different harvesting frequencies total yield is increased without hampering physical acceptability. Yield is increased with increasing nitrogen doses and highest yields were obtained from 200 kg N/ha. Yield contributing characters are also positively correlated with increasing nitrogen.
