Growth parameters, yield components and yields were higher in case of sole cropping of main and fodder crops. Leaf area index; integrated leaf area index; total dry matter and crop growth rate of grasspea were highest from 40 DAS up to immediately before harvest when grasspea was intercropped at 70 kg seed /ha with transplant Aman rice. Economic study on gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio were done on the basis of prevailing market price of inputs and commodities produced. Relay or intercropping systems always showed better performance in terms of gross and net return; benefit cost ratio and land equivalent ratio compared to sole cropping of main or fodder crops at various plant population/unit area. Proximate components viz. dry matter was significantly affected in maize and not significantly affected in grasspea; crude protein was significantly affected in maize and grasspea; crude fiber was significantly affected in maize, not significantly affected in grasspea; ether extract significantly affected in maize and grasspea; ash content was not significantly affected in maize and grasspea; nitrogen free extract and organic matter content of maize and grasspea fodder were not significantly affected by relay or intercropping with main crops or sole cropping of fodder crops at different densities. Maize fodder was grown successfully with no significant fiber yield loss but with higher monetary benefit at 75 cm x 25 cm spacing in Capsularis jute sown in line (25 cm 5 cm).

1. To explore the feasibility of growing maize fodder in wheat, aus rice, jute; and cowpea and black gram fodder in aus rice; and grass pea fodder in transplant Aman rice.

2. To determine the improved management practices, viz. plat densities, degree of land preparation, and time of planting fertilizer application weeding and irrigation for the development of a sustainable fodder production in the existing cropping pattern.

3. To compare the on-station research findings with the experiments conducted in farmers field related to fodder crops production in the existing cropping pattern.

4. To develop profitable and sustainable fodder production technology within the existing cropping system without hampering the yield of the main crops.

Two field experiments were conducted to estimate the plant nutrient management and profitability of intercropping fodders with food and cash crops and to explore the feasibility of maize and legumes fodder production technology in the existing cropping pattern without or minimum yield loss of main crops, at the Agronomy field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from July 2006 to June 2010. The experiments were (1) Experiment No. 1. Growing maize fodder at different densities in transplant Aman rice grasspea + maize fodder relay cropping system where the treatments were T1 = Transplant aman rice I(sole), T2 = Grasspea fodder (sole), T3 = Maize 75 cm x 25 cm (sole), T4 = Maize 75 cm x 50 cm (sole), T5 = Maize 75 cm x 75 cm (sole), T6 = Maize 75 cm x 100 cm (sole), T7 = Maize 100 cm x 25 cm (sole), T8 = Maize 100 cm x 50 cm (sole), T9 = Maize 100 cm x 100 cm (sole), T10 = Maize 25 cm x 15 cm (sole), T11 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 75 cm x 25 cm (sole), T12 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 75 cm x 50 cm, T13 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 75 cm x 75 cm, T14 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 75 cm x 100 cm, T15 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 100 cm x 25 cm, T16 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 100 cm x 50 cm, T17 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 100 cm x 100 cm and T18 = Transplant Aman rice + Grasspea + Maize 25 cm x 15 cm and (2) Experiment No. 2. Growing maize fodder at different spacing’s in Capsularis jute where the treatment were T1 = Jute sole sown in line (25 cm x 5 cm), T2 = Maize 75 cm x 25 cm (sole), T3 = Jute = Maize 75 cm x 25 cm, T4 = Maize 75 cm x 50 cm (sole), T5 = Jute = Maize 75 cm x 50 cm, T6 = Maize 75 cm x 75 cm (sole), T7 = Jute + Maize 75 cm x 75 cm, T8 = Maize 75 cm x 100 cm (sole), T9 = Jute + Maize 75 cm x 100 cm, T10 = Maize 75 cm x 40 cm (sole), T11 = Jute + Maize 75 cm x 40 cm, T12 = Maize 75 cm x 60 cm (sole), T13 = Jute + Maize 75 cm x 60 cm, T14 = Maize 50 cm x 50 cm (sole), T15 = Jute + Maize 50 cm x 50 cm, T16 = Maize 25 cm x 15 cm (sole). The experiment land was medium high in topography having non-calcareous dark grey soil under Agro-ecological zone (AEZ-9). The soil status of the experimental plot was characterized by silt loam in texture, slightly acidic, organic matter below 1.50% and other nutrients content were medium to low. The climate of the experimental site was wet, humid and sub-tropical. Main characteristics of the climate are heavy monsoon rainfall, shordrt winter and long dry spell in pre-monsoon. Transplant Aman rice, grasspea grain and Capsularis jute were the main and maize and grasspea were the fodder crops in the three seasons of one year experimental as relay or inter-cropping system. All the experiment were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications and the size of unit plots were 4.0 m x 2.5m. The main and fodder crops were planted at various spacings or densities as sole crop for comparison.
