Field studies were conducted for two consecutive years to find out ideal planting time of newly developed mungbean varieties for fitting in the cereal based cropping systems in northern region of Bangladesh. In the first year, variety Barimung 6 was planted five times, at 10 days interval on 11 March, 20 March, 30 March, 9 April and 19 April, 2007. In the second year, along with Barimung 6, another new variety BUmug 4 was planted at 15 days interval considering extreme early (22 February, 2008) and late (22 April, 2008) conditions since preceding early potato is usually harvested in mid February and late wheat in mid-April. Both the varieties are short duration as they mature within 60 days as compared to 100 days of traditional varieties. Among the planting times, 20 March planted crop gave the highest grain yield (1,410 kg ha-1) in the first year. In the second year, 22 March planted crop produced the highest yield (1,164 kg ha-1). The mung bean yield varied between 700 kg and 444 kg ha-1 when planted in first and third week of April. Varietal difference in grain yield of mungbean was not significant. However, variety and planting time interacted significantly where and BUmug 4 yielded the highest (1,100 kg ha-1) when planted on 22 February and Barimung 6 produced the highest yield (1,215 kg ha-1) when planted on 22 March. Newly released mungbean variety BUmug 4 is suitable for early planting although neither of the varieties performs well under late planting conditions in northern region of Bangladesh.

To identify ideal planting time of newly released mungbean varieties suitable for cereal based cropping system of northern region of Bangladesh.

Two experiments were conducted at the RDRS, Rangpur, Bangladesh during summer seasons of 2007 and 2008. In the first year, new mungbean variety Barimung 6 was planted five times at 10 days interval, on 11 March, 20 March, 30 March, 9 April and 19 April to gain preliminary idea about the effects of planting time on the productivity of mungbean in northern region. In the second year, the program was revised and along with Barimung 6, another new variety BUmug 4 was planted at 15 days interval starting from extreme early, 22 February to extreme late, 22 April, 2008. This was done based on the first year observation as preceding early potato was harvested in mid February and late wheat in mid April. Thus, in 2008, BUmug 4 and Barimung 6 were planted at 15 days interval on 22 February, 7 March, 22 March, 7 April and 22 April, 2008 to expose the crop to wider range of environmental variations. These two varieties are short duration as it mature within 60 days against 100 days of traditional variety. The experimental design was randomized complete block with four replications. Unit plot size was 4m x 3m and mung bean seed was sown at a planting configuration of 30cm x 10cm. The crop was fertilized at the rate of 40-60-40 kg NPK ha-1 in the form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash. Fertilizers were applied as basal dose at the time of final land preparation. Other intercultural operations were done properly throughout the growing season. Insecticide was sprayed at different growth stages as a precautionary measure to keep the crop safe from insect attack. Data were recorded on agronomic parameters including plant height, pod length, pods per plants, seeds per pod, 1000 seed weight and grain yield. The data were analyzed statistically using analysis of variance technique and significant means were separated using least significance different test (LSD) for comparing the treatment means.

In conclusion, short duration new mungbean varieties Barimung 6 and BUmug 4 can be successfully cultivated in northern region of Bangladesh. Inclusion of mungbean in the cropping systems after harvesting potato and wheat will increase cropping intensity and farm productivity. However, enhancing system productivity will largely depend on planting mungbean at optimum time. For better productivity, mungbean can be sown earlier, even at late February, and that may continue throughout March but not beyond first week of April.
