Production Efficiency of Sugarcane- Cucurbits Intercropping in the Hilly Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali. Rangamati during two consecutive years of 1991-93 to determine the profitability of growing intercrops, such as bottle gourd, khira, pumpkin and wax gourd with sugarcane. The sugarcane equivalent yield showed that sugarcane and bottle gourd produced significantly higher yield (84.76 t/ha) followed by sugarcane and pumpkin (82.73 t/ha), The yield of monoculture sugarcane was 56.72 t/ha. Sugarcane and bottle gourd accorded the highest gross margin (TK.190075 /ha) followed by sugarcane and pumpkin (TK.187272 /ha), while sugarcane and khira earned the lowest (TK. I 23330 Iha). The highest benefit - cost ratio was obtained from sugarcane and pumpkin (4.07) followed by sugarcane and bottle gourd (3.96). The study revealed that pumpkin and bottle gourd were highly compatible and profitable in sugarcane intercropping.

Objectives:

To find out the most compatible and economic intercrop(s) with sugarcane in the hilly region.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during two consecutive years of 1991-92 and 1992-93. The soil of the experimental field was sandy loam having p^H 6.5. The local variety of sugarcane was planted following end to end method at a row spacing of 1.5 meter. The intercrops included in the treatments were: bottle gourd, khira, pumpkin and wax gourd. Sugarcane was also grown as sole crop. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 4.5m x 3.5m. Cucurbit seeds were planted in pit at a spacing of2.25m x 1.75m. The sowing date was on 24 October, 1991 and 29 October, 1992. Fertilizers were applied for sugarcane @ 160, 120, 160 kg/ha of N, P₂0₅ and K₂0. One-third of nitrogen, one-half of potassium and all phosphorus were applied in trenches prior to planting. The remaining potassium and one- third of nitrogen were applied as top dressing at tillering stage on 120 days after transplanting of sugarcane. The rest one-third of nitrogen was top dressed after 175 days of transplantation. The intercrop received 10 ton cowdung/ha and 150, 120. 100 kg/ha or urea, TSP and MP. respectively. Whole amount or cowdung and TSP were applied in pit before seeding. Urea and MP were applied in pit at three equal splits- at seeding. flowering and fruiting stages. All normal cultural practices appropriate for cane as well as intercrops were done and crops were grown under irrigated condition. Data on cane length and cane yield were recorded after the removal of cane tops as is done for seed cane. Cane diameter was measured hy the average data from base. mid and upper portion or the cane. Cost - benefit analysis done on a hectare basis as per present market value. In the case of intercropping with cucurbits, sugarcane equivalent yield (SCEY) was calculated.
