Soybean Yield Response to Variable Doses of Phosphorus and Sulphur Under Ganges Tidal Floodplain Soil Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the response of nodulation, dry matter and seed yield of soybean to P and S fertilization on a nonsaline noncalcareous soil of Ganges Tidal Floodplain. Four levels of P viz. 0, 40, 60 and 80 kg/ ha as triple super phosphate and four levels of S viz. 0, 20, 30 and 40 kg/ ha as gypsum were used. Application of P and S had significant positive effects on nodulation, dry matter production, yield and yield attributes of soybean compared to their respective control treatments. The highest grain yield of 1.70t/ ha was produced by 60 kg P and 20 kg S / ha with blanket dose of 25 kg N and 60 kg K₂0/ ha. However, the treatment consisting of 40 kg P and 20 kg S/ ha along with blanket application of 25 kg N and 60 kg K₂0/ ha was found to be more profitable than other treatments based on benefit cost ratio.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of different rates of P and S fertilizers on growth, yield and yield attributes of soybean under the agro- ecological condition of ganges Tidal Floodplain of Patuakhali.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Patuakhali Agricultural College Farm, Dumki, Patuakhali during December 1998 through April 1999. The soil was clay loam belonging to the nonsaline noncalcareous part of Ganges Tidal Hood Plain. The pH value of the soil was 6.8 with organic matter 1.2% and N 0.083 %, P 15 ppM, K₂O 0.084 %, S 20 ppm and Zn 2.6 ppm. The treatment consisted of 4 levels of P (0, 40, 60 and 80 kg P₂O₅ /ha) and 4 levels of S (0, 20, 30 and 40 kg S/ha). The experiment was laid out in a randomized completely block design with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 4 m x 2.5 m. P and S were applied in the form/of triple super phosphate and gypsum respectively as basal. A blanket rate of 60 kg K₂O / ha as muriate of potash and 25 Kg N/ ha as urea were applied to the plots during final land preparation recommended by BARI. The seeds of soybean Bangladesh soybean-4. (G-2) were sown on 25 December, 1998 continuously in 30 cm wide rows at a seed rate of 80 Kg / ha. Upon emergence, seedlings were thinned to a plant to plant distance of about 5-7 cm. The crop was weeded on 25 days after sowing. One irrigation was given at the time of pod filling. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Five plants were randomly selected and uprooted to study nodule number, nodule dry weight, leaf dry weight, plant height and total dry matter (above ground parts) at 50 % flowering. The number of effective and ineffective nodules were counted and recorded. Nodules which looked very pink after dissecting with a sharp blade was recorded to be effective. Data on yield attributes were recorded from ten plants selected randomly from each plot. Seed yield was recorded on 20 May, 1999 from a harvesting area of 4.5 m² (2.5mx 1.8m) of each unit plot. The collected data were analysed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged with DMRT (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
