Variety and Species
The experiment was conducted at the Plant Physiology field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during February 2014 to July 2014. The test variety was BARI Karala-1. The experiment consisted of eleven treatments viz. control (distilled water), each of 5 concentrations of GA3 (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 ppm) and 5 concentrations of NAA (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 ppm). Randomized complete block design with three replications was used for the treatments. At first sandy loam soil and well decomposed cowdung were thoroughly mixed in 1:1 ratio and then plastic pots were filled with this mixture. Seeds were placed in plastic pots in 01 February 2014. Before sowing seeds were soaked in tap water for 24 hours. Fifteen days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 15 February, 2014. PGRs were sprayed at the 4 leaf stage (22 days old seedlings). Control plants were sprayed with distilled water. Plants were spaced at 2.0 x 1.6 m. There were 33 unit plots measuring 4.0 m x 2.5 m (10.0 m2) and each plot contains four pits. After final land preparation, pits were prepared by spade and each pit was 30 x 30 x 30 cm. The land was fertilized by 2000 kg cowdung and 80 kg N, 35 kg P, 75 kg K, 17 kg S, 1.5 kg B,4 kg Zn and 2 kg Mg /ha. The source of N, P, K, S, B, Zn and Mg were urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, boric acid, zinc sulphate and magnesium sulphate. The total amount of cowdung, P, S, B, Zn, Mg and one-third of each N and MoP were applied in pits before transplanting. The rest of urea of N and MoP were applied in four equal installments at 20, 35, 55 and 75 days after planting (DAT). Branches of bamboo (kanchi) were used for the support of the plants. Plants were allowed to be grown individually and not be allowed to intermingle with other plants grown beside. Weeding and irrigation were done as when required. When 1st flowering was seen, the number of male and female flowers was counted. Data were recorded on days to first female flowering, number of male flowers/plant, number of female flowers/plant, number of fruits/plant, individual fruit weight, number of seeds/fruit and yield/plot. Plot yield was then converted to per hectare yield. The sequential pickings started from the second 2nd week of April. Recorded data were statistically analyzed by MSTAT-C and means were compared by LSD (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
