A field experiment on bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) taking the variety BARI Karala-1 was conducted at the Plant Physiology Field of Horticulture Research Center, Bangladesh Agricultural research Institute, Gazipur during February 2014 to July 2014 to study the effect of plant growth regulators on sex expression, yield and yield components of the crop. The experiment consisted of eleven growth regulator treatments viz., five different levels of GA3 (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 ppm) and five levels of NAA (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 ppm) along with distilled water considered as control. The results of the investigation indicated significant differences among the treatments on most of the parameters studied. All GA3 and NAA performed well in respect of number of female flowers and number of fruits per plant, sex ratio, individual fruit weight and yield per hectare as compared to control but NAA showed better performance in respect of sex expression, yield and yield attributes of bitter gourd as compared to GA3. Application of 150 ppm NAA gave the lowest number of male flowers (122/plant) and the highest number of fruits (20/plant). Maximum number of female flowers was recorded in NAA at 100 ppm (48/plant) followed by NAA at 150 ppm (44/plant). The experimental data revealed that the maximum fruit yield was recorded significantly with the application of NAA @ 150 ppm (22.00 t/ha)) closely followed by NAA @ 100 ppm (21.85 t/ha) as compared to other treatments and significant lowest yield was obtained in control. The increase in fruit yield was attributed due to increase in number of female flowers per plant and number of fruits per plant. Application of GA3 @ 50 ppm gave the reasonable yield of bitter gourd.

To study the effect of plant growth regulators on sex expression, yield and yield components of the crop.

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Physiology field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during February 2014 to July 2014. The test variety was BARI Karala-1. The experiment consisted of eleven treatments viz. control (distilled water), each of 5 concentrations of GA3 (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 ppm) and 5 concentrations of NAA (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 ppm). Randomized complete block design with three replications was used for the treatments. At first sandy loam soil and well decomposed cowdung were thoroughly mixed in 1:1 ratio and then plastic pots were filled with this mixture. Seeds were placed in plastic pots in 01 February 2014. Before sowing seeds were soaked in tap water for 24 hours. Fifteen days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 15 February, 2014. PGRs were sprayed at the 4 leaf stage (22 days old seedlings). Control plants were sprayed with distilled water. Plants were spaced at 2.0 x 1.6 m. There were 33 unit plots measuring 4.0 m x 2.5 m (10.0 m2) and each plot contains four pits. After final land preparation, pits were prepared by spade and each pit was 30 x 30 x 30 cm. The land was fertilized by 2000 kg cowdung and 80 kg N, 35 kg P, 75 kg K, 17 kg S, 1.5 kg B,4 kg Zn and 2 kg Mg /ha. The source of N, P, K, S, B, Zn and Mg were urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, boric acid, zinc sulphate and magnesium sulphate. The total amount of cowdung, P, S, B, Zn, Mg and one-third of each N and MoP were applied in pits before transplanting. The rest of urea of N and MoP were applied in four equal installments at 20, 35, 55 and 75 days after planting (DAT). Branches of bamboo (kanchi) were used for the support of the plants. Plants were allowed to be grown individually and not be allowed to intermingle with other plants grown beside. Weeding and irrigation were done as when required. When 1st flowering was seen, the number of male and female flowers was counted. Data were recorded on days to first female flowering, number of male flowers/plant, number of female flowers/plant, number of fruits/plant, individual fruit weight, number of seeds/fruit and yield/plot. Plot yield was then converted to per hectare yield. The sequential pickings started from the second 2nd week of April. Recorded data were statistically analyzed by MSTAT-C and means were compared by LSD (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

From the results of the present study, it is evident that NAA treated bitter gourd performed well in respect of sex expression, yield and yield attributes of bitter gourd as compared to GA3. Application of NAA at both 100 and 150 ppm proved best and produced lower sex ratio by increasing the female flowers (70% and 63%, respectively over control) through suppressing male flowers and gave maximum number of fruits per plant and yield per hectare.
