A field experiment on brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) having three sowing time (0I October, 0I February and 0I June) and eight varieties (BARI Begun-1, BARI Begun-4, BARI Begun-5, BARI Begun-6, BARI Begun-7, BARI Begun-8, BARI Begun-9 and BARI Begun -10) was carried out at Plant Physiology field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur to study the reproductive and fruit setting behavior of brinjal varieties. Most of the varieties produced both single flower and floral inflorescence but BARI Begun-6 and BARI Begun-9 produced single flower only. Flower number per inflorescence varied within individual plant as well as among the varieties studied. The basic type of inflorescence appeared as scorpioid cymes. The first flower in the inflorescence was larger with a strong peduncle. There was a close relation between fruit setting and stigma position in eggplant. The stigma of first flower was well developed and its position in relation to anther tips was above, or on the same level or both same level and below another tips. Flowers with stigmas that were below anther tips and cluster flowers were aborted from the plants. Cluster flowers of BARI Begun-4 had stigma above anther tips and produced fruits in cluster in all seasons. October sowing and BARI Begun-4 singly and in combination gave the maximum percentage of fruit set per plant and fruit yield. BARI Begun-4 produced maximum percentage of long styled flower, maximum percentage of fruit set per plant as well as maximum yield in all seasons.

  1. To study reproductive and fruit setting behavior of brinjal.
  2. To identify suitable lines for more fruit set during summer season in Bangladesh.

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Physiology Research field, Horticulture Research Center, Gazipur, during October 2012 to September 2013. Seeds were sown in three different dates at 01 October 2012, 01 February 2013 and 01 June 2013. Eight BARI released eggplant varieties were used for the study. All the varieties were open pollinated and collected from Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). The experiment was laid out in RCBD (factorial) with three replications. Seeds were sown in the fixed dates and the seedlings were raised in a nursery. Thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted in the field. The unit plot size was 10.5 x 0.70 m and 15 plants were planted in a plot at a spacing of 70 cm maintaining a row to row distance 1m including 30 cm drain. All the agronomic practices were followed to grow a successful crop under irrigated condition. Pesticides were applied to control Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodesorbonalis) following the recommendations of the Entomology Section of HRC, BARI Gazipur. Data recording commenced when 50% of plants reached the stage of flower initiation and continued throughout the reproductive stage for each variety. The following data were recorded from all the varieties: he bearing behavior of flower (single/inflorescence), number of flowers per cluster, number of fruit set per cluster, stigma position in relation to anther tips at full anthesis (below/same level/above), the diameter (cm) of fully opened flowers, randomly selected five flowers from Randomly selected five inflorescence per varieties per replication were tagged on first flower bud and these inflorescence were examined for fruit setting. Also, randomly selected first flowers whose stigmas were below anther tips were tagged and checked for fruit set. Pollen viability was observed at the time of 10.30 am. Recorded data were statistically analyzed and means were compared by LSD at 5% level of probability (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Maximum viable pollen was found from October sowing (94.79%) followed by February sowing. No significant difference was found between February and June sowing in respect of pollen viability. The variety BARI Begun-4 produced the highest no. of flower/inflorescence. There was no significant difference among BARI Begun-1, BARI Begun-7, BARI Begun-8 and BARI Begun -10. Maximum no. of fruit set/inflorescence was recorded from Begun-4 and the lowest from other seven varieties being identical each other. Maximum days were required for reaching 50% flowering stage by BARI Begun-6 sown during June and minimum days by BARI Begun-4 sown during October. The highest number of flower/plant was recorded in BARI Begun-4 with October sowing (104) followed by BARI Begun-1 with October sowing (100) and BARI Begun-4 with February sowing (100) and its lowest value from BARI Begun-6 with June sowing (30). BARI Begun-4 coupled with October sowing produced maximum percentage of long styled flower followed by BARI Begun-7 with the same sowing and the lowest percentage of long styled flower was recorded from BARI Begun-5 with June sowing. Maximum percentage of medium styled flower was obtained from BARI Begun-6 with October sowing followed by BARI Begun-9 with the same sowing and its lowest percentage was from BARI Begun -5 with February sowing. Maximum fruit set from long styled flower was found in BARI Begun-4 with October sowing (97.74%) followed by BARI Begun-1 with the same sowing (95.73%) and lowest fruit set% from BARI Begun-6 with February sowing. Maximum fruit set from medium styled flower was recorded in BARI Begun-6 with February sowing (50%). Among four types of flower, only the long and medium-styled flowers of inflorescence set fruit in all seasons. The first flower of inflorescence set fruit and cluster flowers were aborted in most varieties. Only BARI Begun-4 produced fruits in cluster. Therefore, only the first flower should be considered for hybridization and seed multiplication of BARI released brinjal varieties in all seasons. BARI Begun-4 performed well compared to BARI Begun-1, BARI Begun-3, BARI Begun-8 and BARI Begun-10 in summer seasons. So BARI Begun-4 had higher degree of heat tolerance against reproductive characters.
