Efficacy of Chemicals and Botanical in Controlling Powdery Mildew of Cucumber

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five treatments i.e. Neem oil, Baking soda, Thiovit , Water spray and the Control were tested against cucumber powdery mildew disease. The field studies revealed that the Powdery mildew disease progression of cucumber was successfully arrested by all the treatments. Baking soda, Thiovit, and Neem Oil sprayed plots recorded 65.31, 58.50 and 53.84 percent disease reduction over control, respectively. Baking soda was found to be superior to other treatments in reducing the disease incidence. The highest yield (2.34 kg/plant) was recorded in backing soda sprayed plants followed by thiovit, Neem Oil, sprayed plants.

Objectives:

To study the effect of chemicals against cucumber powdery mildew.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted with cucumber line CS 0080 during March–June, 2014, in the HRC vegetable field at Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Regular agronomic practices were followed according to BARI crop production guide. The treatments of the experiment were T₁ – Neem oil, T₂- Baking soda, T₃ – Thiovit 80 wp (2%), T₄ - Water spray and T₅ – Control. Powdery mildew incidence was recorded at 15 days after each spray. The severity (intensity) of powdery mildew disease was assessed using a 0 to 5 scale (0 – No. infection, 1 – 0 to 10 leaf area covered with mildew growth, 2 – 10.1 to 15, 3 - 15.1 to 25, 4 – 25.1 to 50 and 5 more than 50 percent leaf area covered with mildew growth) as described by Jamadar and Desai (1997). Percent disease index (PDI) for the powdery mildew was computed according to the following formula (Mian 1995). PDI = ( Sum of all disease ratings/ Total number of rating x Maximum disease grade) x100.

Achievement/Findings:

Baking soda, Thiovit, Need Oil and Water sprayed plots recorded 65.31,58.50,53.84 and 30.43 percent disease reduction over control, respectively . Baking soda was found to be superior over other treatments in reducing the disease incidence to the level of 21.54 PDI followed by Thiovit 80 wp (25.77 PDI) and Neem Oil (28.66 PDI). Among the treatments, only water spray was less effective to powdery mildew disease of cucumber. The highest yield was recorded in Baking soda (2.34 kg/plant) followed by Thiovit (1.97 kg/pt) and Neem Oil (1.22 kg/pt) which were significantly higher than the yield obtained from untreated plots (0.49 kg/pt).
