IPM package for pointed gourd was tested at Shahajahanpur, Bogra to reduce soil borne diseases and increase yield of pointed gourd. Both talc base Trichoderma + MOC and compost base Trichoderma + reduced amount of fertilizer along with IPM package reduced the fruit fly infestation and soil borne disease infection including root-knot nematode, and increased average yield of pointed gourd.

  Pointed gourd

To reduce soil borne diseases and increase yield of pointed gourd.

Vine cuttings made from previous year crop and rooted during November-December and planted January- February in order to obtain a crop in the same year. However in the experimental plot plants were grown from previous years’ root sucker. From one plant’s root suckers developed a bunch of seedling in March. Farmers selected 2/3 strong seedling and the rest were destroyed. After seedling germination, intercultural operation, raise bed, fertilization and irrigation was done. A female: male ratio of 9:1 was maintained for ensuring maximum fruit set (Maurya et al. 1985). Treatments: i). IPM package I : Tricho-compost @ 2.5 t/ha for soil borne disease management + culure pheromone trap for fruit fly control + Soap water spray & hand cleaning for mealy bug control + Tricho-leachate spray for foliar disease control ii). IPM package II : Talc base Trichoderma + mustard oil extract cake for soil borne disease management + culure pheromone trap for fruit fly control + Soap water spray & hand cleaning for mealy bug control + Tricho-leachate spray for foliar disease control. pheromone trap was set. Bordeaux pest (mixer of Ca (OH)2 and Cupper sulphate, 1:1) was used to control gummosis disease. Infected fruits data were recorded. For nematode study, soil samples were collected from root zone of pointed gourd plants. Soil samples collected from root zone of each plant were mixed together according to treatments and replications which considered as composite soil samples. Nematodes were extracted from 10 g soil sub-samples taken from each composite soil sample using the Bearmann funnel technique (Flegg and Hooper 1970). Nematodes were collected at 24 h intervals for 72 h, heat-killed, and fixed with triethanolamine formaldehyde (TAF) solution (Shepherd 1970). Plant parasitic nematode larvae were identified by using an inverted compound microscope at 40X and diagnostic keys of Goodey (1963). iii). Control: Control (famers’ practices) Treatments were arranged flowing randomized complete block with three replications. Treatments were applied in the plot during final land preparation (1st week of April, 2014). Per two decimal lands one pheromone trap was set. Bordeaux pest (mixer of Ca (OH)2 and Cupper sulphate, 1:1) was used to control gummosis disease. Infected fruits data were recorded. 1.   Budget:

On average 60 to 70 fruit flies were trapped in a culure pheromone trap per week at early fruiting stage. However it was reduced at later stage which was 25 to 30 flies per trap in a week. Root knot nematode infestation was the minimum in Tricho-compost @ 2.5 t/ha along with 75% chemical fertilizer treatment (IPM package 1) followed by talc base Trichoderma + mustard oil cake (MOC) application treatment (IPM package 2) and the maximum was in control (farmer’s practices) treatment. Root knot nematode population was reduced by 64.84% in Tricho-compost applied plot (IPM package 1) and 57.03% in talc base Trichoderma+ MOC application plot. Average yield was the maximum in talc base Trichoderma + mustard oil cake application plot (19.21) followed by Tricho-compost application plot (18.79) and the lowest was in farmer practices plot (16.04). Yield increased over control was 19.14% in talc base Trichoderma + mustard oil cake application plot while it was 17.14% in Tricho-compost application plot. Fruit rotten due to insect and disease infestation was lower in Tricho-product application plot than farmer’s practices. Fruit rotten reduced by 51.72% in talc base Trichoderma + mustard oil cake applied plot followed by 48.28 in Tricho-compost applied plot. IPM package II = Talc base Trichoderma + mustard oil extract cake for soil borne disease management + culure pheromone trap for fruit fly control + Soap water spray & hand cleaning for mealy bug control + Tricho-leachate spray for foliar disease control Control= Control (famers’ practices). Both talc base and compost base Trichoderma along with IPM package reduced soil borne disease incidence and increased yield of pointed gourd. However the experiment is ongoing. Statistical analysis will be performed after final harvest.
