Management Strategies for Pythium Diseases of Summer Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was under taken in seed bed nursery and main field with summer tomato at HRC, BARI, Gazipur for management of Pythium disease of summer tomato. Application of Tricho-compost @ 500 g /m² + Tricho-leachate 300 ml/m²and mustard oil cake @ 100 g /m² + talc base Trichoderma @ 5 g/m² increased the number of seedlings 49.79% and 37.88%, respectively and reduced the mortality of seedling 70.77% and 61.54%, respectively. In main field, both of the IPM package increased number of fruits and yield of fruits, and reduced fruits rotten. Soil incorporation of ¾ Chemical fertilizer + Root deeping in Bordeaux mixture +Tricho-compost @ 12 kg/ tunnel +foliar spray of Tricho-leachate + Pheromone trap for Helicoverpa + hand picking of insect (IPM package 1) and Chemical fertilizer + Mustard oil cake (MOC) @ 3.00 kg/ tunnel + talc base Trichoderma @ 300 g/ tunnel + foliar spray of Tricho-leachate + Pheromone trap for Helicoverpa + hand picking of insect (IPM package 2) reduced 66.71% and 57.14% Pythium rot, respectively and increased yield 30.45 % and 28.21 %, respectively. The maximum disease and the minimum yield recorded in un-amended control treatment.

Objectives:

The experiment was conducted to manage Pythium disease of summer tomato.

Methodology:

Horticulture Research Centre seed bed nursery (3 m x1 m) were taken for seedling production. Treatments were i) Tricho-compost @ 500 g /m²+ Tricho-leachate 300 ml/m². ii) mustard oil cake @ 100 g /m² + talc base Trichoderma @ 5 g/m² and iii) Control (without any amendment). Seedlings were covered with 60 meshes net. Two gram of seeds (400 no.) were sown in one seed bed nursery. Germination percentage was about 90% (on blotter paper). Treatments IPM package 1: i) root dipping in Bordeaux mixture + soil amendment with Tricho-compost @ 12 kg/ tunnel +foliar spray of Tricho-leachate + Pheromone trap for Helicoverpa ii) root dipping in Bordeaux mixture + Mustard oil cake (MOC) @ 3.00 kg/ tunnel + talc base Trichoderma @ 300 g/ tunnel + foliar spray of Tricho-leachate + Pheromone trap for Helicoverpa and iii) Control. Polyethylene shade tunnel size is 18.5 m x 2.3 m. Plant spacing is 60 m x 40 m. About 200 seedlings were transplanted per plots (in one tunnel). Cowdung 40 kg (7-8 bamboo baskets) and Urea: TSP: MP =1.5:1.2: 1.7 kg per tunnel was applied.

Both of the IPM package increased seedling number and fruit yield, and reduced seedling mortality and plant wilting.
