Response of Variety and Population Density on Yield Attributes and Yield of Boro Rice (oryza Sativa)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted at the Agronomy Field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), during Boro season (November 2010 to April 2011) to investigate the influence of population density on growth and yield of inbred and hybrid Boro rice. The treatments consisted of four varieties viz., BRRI Dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI Hybrid Dhan2 and ACI Hybrid Dhan2 and four population density viz. 1, 2, 3 and 4 seedlings hill^-1. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The effect of variety, population density hill^-1 and their interaction showed significant variation in respect of yield contributing parameters and yield. ACI Hybrid Dhan2, 2 seedlings hill^-1 and their combination increased yield attributing parameters, grain and straw yield for Boro season.

Objectives:

To investigate the influence of population density on growth and yield of inbred and hybrid Boro rice.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), under the agro-ecological zone of Modhupur Tract, AEZ-28, during Boro season (November 2010 to April 2011) to study the influence of population density on growth and yield of inbred and hybrid Boro rice. Geographically the experimental area is located at 24°75′ N and 90°50′ E longitude at the elevation of 18 m above the sea level. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment comprised as two factors such as variety (V₁: BRRI Dhan28, V₂: BRRI Dhan29, V₃: BRRI hybrid Dhan2, V₄: ACIhybrid Dhan2) and population density (S₁: 1 seedling hill^-1, S₂: 2 seedlings hill^-1, S₃: 3 seedlings hill^-1, S₄: 4 seedlings hill^-1). Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), zinc (Zn) and sulphur (S) @ 150, 24, 99, 2.6 and 18 kg ha^-1 in the form of urea, triple sulpher phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP), zinc sulphate and gypsum, respectively were applied as basal during final land preparation except urea. Split application of urea was done at 10, 35 and 55 days after transplanting. Pre-germinated seeds of hybrid rice were sown in the wet seedbed and proper care was taken to raise the seedlings in seedbed. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted as per the treatment of population density in each hill maintaining the spacing with 25 cm ×15 cm on the well puddle plots. Intercultural operations such as gap filling, weeding, and chemical pest management were done as and when required. About 2-3 cm water layer was maintained in each plot until the crop attained maturity. Maturity of crop was determined when 80% of the grains become golden yellow in color. An area of 3 m²was harvested from center of each plot and the grains were dried, threshed and adjusted at 14% moisture content to estimate the grain yield. The yield contributing characters viz. number of effective tillers hill^-1, number of grains panicle^-1and 1000-grain weights were recorded from plant samples. Finally, grain and straw yields were converted to t ha^-1. The significance of the difference among the treatment means were estimated by the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability.
