Collection, Evaluation and Maintenance of Dahlia

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty genotypes of dahlia were evaluated at the Floriculture Field of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during winter season of 2013-2014. Marked variation on different parameters was observed among the genotypes under study. Considering attractive colour, flower number and maximum durability of flower on the plant, BARI Dahlia-1, DV-002, DV-007 and DV-010 may be recommended for lawn.

Objectives:

To identify accessions and helps to select materials with relevant characteristics for varietal improvement.

Methodology:

Twenty genotypes of dahlia were grown during winter season of 2013-2014 at the Floriculture Field of HRC, BARI. All the genotypes were collected from different nurseries. Accession numbers were given to each entry. Primarily cuttings were prepared for planting in the sand in mid September, 2013. Immediately after rooting, 25 days old cuttings were transferred to main field. Manures and fertilizers were applied at the rate of cowdung 5 kg, Urea 200 g, TSP 250 g and MoP 200 g/sq. m, respectively. The entire amount of cowdung, TSP and MoP were applied during final land preparation. Half of urea was applied as top dressing after 45 days of transplanting. The remaining half of the urea was applied during flowering stage. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were recorded on 5 randomly selected plants for plant height, shoots/plant, days to first flower bud appearance, flowers/plant, stalk length, flower diameter, duration of flower in plant, number of tubers/plant and fresh weight of root tubers. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and treatment means were separated by Least Significant Difference Test according to Steel and Torrie (1960).
