Evaluation of Anthurium Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nine anthurium genotypes were evaluated at Floriculture Field of HRC, BARI during the year 2013-2014. The study revealed that there had remarkable variation among the genotypes in both qualitative and quantitative traits. Based on flower colour, spathe size, spadix length, flower number and vase life, AA-005 and AA-008 were found promising to go ahead for varietal development.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of Anthurium genotypes suitable for cut flowers and pot plants in Bangladesh condition.

Methodology:

The present investigation was carried out at Floriculture Field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the period 2013-2014. Nine genotypes (AA-001, AA-002, AA-003, AA-004, AA-005, AA-006, AA-007, AA-008 and AA-009) of Anthurium (Anthurium andreanum) were used as materials grown in earthen pot in the present investigation. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Coco block was used as medium. Fertilizers were applied for getting best growth and flowering of plants according to Simon et al., (1999). Data on vegetative and floral characters like plant height, number of leaves, leaf size, number of side shoots, plant spread, stalk length, spathe size, spadix length, number of flowers, vase life etc. were recorded. The data recorded on the aforesaid parameters were statistically analyzed through analysis of variance with the help of ‘MSTAT’ software. The difference between treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference Test according to Steel and Torrie (1960).

Achievement/Findings:

In respect of leaf colour, the observed genotypes were categorized into three groups: green, light green and deep green. Three genotypes (AA-002, AA-004 and AA-005) had light green leaf, one genotype (AA-009) had deep green leaf whereas rest of the genotypes produced green leaf. All of 9 genotypes were divided into 6 groups on the basis of their flower colour. They were deep red, white, pinkish white, light red, pink and light pink. Marked variation was also observed in spadix colour . The colours of spadix were categorized into red, yellowish green, reddish yellow, yellow, pinkish white, and pinkish yellow.The tallest plant was observed in AA-001 (55.0 cm) closely followed by AA-008 (54.7 cm). No variation was observed among the genotypes in case of side shoot . AA-009 produced the maximum number of leaves (9) closely followed by of AA-008 (8). Longest flower stalk (25.0 cm) was recorded in AA-008 closely followed by BARI Anthurium-1 (22.2 cm). Besides, shortest flower stalk (13.8 cm) was produced by AA- 007. The size of spathe varied significantly among the genotypes ranging from 6.5-12.5 cm. Among the genotypes, the maximum spathe (12.5 cm) was recorded in BARI Anthurium-1 closely followed by AA-008 (12.0 cm) while minimum size (6.5 cm) spathe was recorded in AA-007. Maximum spadix length (5.6 cm) was observed in AA-005. In case of number of flower, the genotype AA-005 produced more number of flowers per plant (7) closely followed by AA-008 (6); while the minimum number of flowers (3) was produced by AA-007. Maximum vase life (20 days) was recorded in BARI Anthurium-1 closely followed by AA-005 (17 days) and AA-008 (16 days) while the minimum duration (7 days) was found in AA-002. Anthurium flowers have a good potentiality for local and export market. Based on flower colour, spathe size, spadix length, flower number and vase life, AA-005 and AA-008 were found promising to go ahead for varietal development.
