Evaluation of Aster Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the performance of five aster germplasm was conducted at Floricultural Field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014. Marked variations for all qualitative and quantitative characters were observed. Based on flower colour, flower number, flower size and durability of flower, the germplasm A-001 and A-004 were identified as good germplasm.

Objectives:

To find out the best line (s) for cut flower.

Methodology:

The experimental material comprised of five genotypes, A-001, A-002, A-003, A-004 and A-005. They were grown during winter season of 2013-2014 at the Floriculture Field of HRC, BARI. All the genotypes were collected from different nurseries. Accession numbers were given to each entry. Before planting, land was prepared properly and manured with 5 t/ha of cow dung. TSP and MoP were also applied @ 120 and 80 kg/ha at the time of final land preparation. Urea 100 kg/ha was applied in two equal installments of 45 and 60 days after transplanting. Watering and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were recorded on 5 randomly selected plants for plant height, branches/plant, flowers/plant, stalk length, plant spread, flower size, flower durability etc. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and treatment means were separated by DMRT according to Steel and Torrie (1960).

Achievement/Findings:

The tallest plant was recorded in A-001 (50.5 cm) while A-005 produced the shortest plant (40.0 cm). Plant spread was maximum in A-004 (32.0 cm) and this genotype was significantly superior to all others. The longest stalk was produced by A-004 (30.0 cm) closely followed by A-001 (28.4 cm) while shortest stalk was recorded from A-003 (21.0 cm).Among the genotypes, A-004 produced the maximum number of flower (45) per plant while A-003 had the minimum (28) . Among the genotypes, flower durability varied from 8 to 13 days. The maximum flower durability was recorded in genotypes in A-004 (13 days) followed by A-001 (11 days) while the minimum durability was found in A-003 (8 days). Based on flower colour, flower number, flower size and vase life, A-001 and A-004 were identified as good germplasm. More number of genotypes will be collected for continuing the experiment in order to improve this flower under Bangladesh context. .
